Japanese Carbon Fiber Firm Indicted

LOS ANGELES -- A federal grand jury indicted a Japanese carbon fiber company and its California-based subsidiary Tuesday for obstruction of justice related to a price-fixing probe.

A federal grand jury investigating possible violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act subpoenaed the documents in January 1999.

Officials at Toho Carbon Fibers, which is based in Menlo Park, declined to comment on the indictment.

The indictment charges that incriminating documents were secretly removed from the Menlo Park headquarters of Toho USA and sent to the headquarters of Toho Japan in Tokyo to prevent the grand jury from receiving them.
