Romney: I Wanna Be Massachusetts Guv

The race is not to the Swift: Controversial acting Jane Swift withdrew today from the Massachusetts governor's race and threw her support to Winter Olympics boss Mitt Romney. Later this afternoon he announced his candidacy.

``I believe that this is in the best interest of our state as it will allow the Republican Party's best chances of holding the governor's office in November,'' said Swifty, fighting back tears at the Statehouse in Boston.

After a Republican activist recently tried to get her a job in the Bush administration to ease her out of the race, Swifty fumed, ``I guess I should be accustomed to powerful men trying to tell me that they know better than I do what it is I should be doing.'' But after her poll numbers kept falling, she backed Romney.

The Associated Press described her reign as lieutenant governor as "scandal-filled." It noted her popularity dropped as the state's tax-and-spend legislators caused a worsening budget crunch, and she was fined for having aides baby-sit her daughter.

Lost among all the media adulation Romney received for running the Games in Utah, not surprisingly, was how the Olympics snubbed the Boy Scouts.

Five Democrats are running for their party's gubernatorial nomination, including left-wing former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich.

Of course, a Republican in Taxachusetts isn't much different from a Democrat in a normal state such as North Carolina or Indiana. But Romney couldn't possibly screw up as badly as the likes of Teddy Kennedy, John Kerry, Michael Dukakis and Barney Frank. We hope.

As Romney said on Salt Lake telvision on Sunday: In Utah I am viewed as not conservative enough, and in Massachusetts I'm viewed as too conservative. Since I've spent most of my life in Massachusetts, I'll probably try to go into politics there.

Whatever his political views, he appeared to Utahans as a very good and competent man, and we wish him success in whatever he strives to do. Thanks for doing a great job in your role organizing the Winter Olympics. And much success in trying to clean up the scandals in Massachusetts if your are sucessful in your bid to lead the Bay State.
