[history]
Today the United Nations convenes a major conference in Monterrey, Mexico, on the need to sharply increase foreign aid. President Bush will be heavily pressured to go along when he addresses the conference Friday.
The plight of the developing world cannot be exaggerated. Poverty, disease, unemployment and a general sense of hopelessness affect most of the world's population. It is impossible not to be moved by their condition and want to help.

Although the article doesn't report this, the major item on the agenda is to push through what was formerly called the Tobin Tax (Tobin has recently passed on), which would tax all international financial transactions.
This would be a taxation beyond the ability of the American people to control. All these monies would pass thru UN institutions, and the estimated amount YEARLY that is being proposed equals $1.7 Trillion, only slightly less that the current budget for the United States of America.
Can you imagine how much LIBERALISM and SOCIALISM will be pushed on us through The United Nations if this is allowed to go forward? The UN will finally have its own military and will become a de facto world government, as it always was intended to be.
Will our President George Bush stop this, or will he cave in?

Hmmmmmm.... My gut reaction is against taxation by the UN.
OTOH, Willie Green doesn't engage in international financial transactions, therefor the tax wouldn't apply to me.
AND a tax on international financial transactions would tend to hinder international financial transactions, THUS HINDERING GLOBALISM!!!
Hmmmmm.... I'm gonna hafta think more about this one!!!

He shocked us with is endorsement of alien amnesty. He won't, however, permit this to happen. If he does, even I (die-hard supporter and campaigner for Bush) will finally re-assess my vote the next presidential election. That said, I'm confident he won't go for this nonsense.

They'll keep trying until they get a President and Senate that will agree to this tax. The only solution is US withdrawl from the UN.
To: chadmaster
Either that or the UN retreats into a strict role of diplomacy in which it might, although somewhat redundant, actually do some good. Emphasis on
might since diplomacy was essentially the function of the UN's ill-fated and impotent predecessor, the League of Nations. The UN as presently constituted is a dysfunctional, socialist body that can only harm the interests of America and all mankind. I'm all for our withdrawal from membership and its eradication, but not even the most conservative of our leaders seem willing to openly advocate that.
I expect that would change once the populace of this nation had a sudden paradigm and saw things as they really are, resulting in a dramatic reconstitution of Congress. That's what we labor for. That's why we're here.

That $1.7 trillion isn't going to just appear from the ether. Who do you think is going to pay it? People who work pay for everything. The only way you can avoid the U.N. tax is to quit working and quit spending.

Maybe we can achieve a better result politically. Maybe. It's sure worth fighting for, given what's at stake.

Most oil is imported and that's an international financial transaction. Willie Green didn't pay for the computer he wrote that message on? Most of the chips inside were manufactured in Asia.
Anything crossing national boundaries, both imports and exports, will be effected by this. What's worse is that it will be outside the possibility of control and accountability to the US taxpayer.

Question: Wouldn't it be unconstitutional to enact a Tobin Tax whose funds went to the UN, even if approved by the Senate? It's just like the International Criminal Court thing: If the Senate agreed on some treaty that allowed for a court higher than that of the US Supreme Court, it would never matter because it would be unconstitutional. The federal level of the US government is the highest level of government our citizens can ever be responsible to, PERIOD. Right?

But what the heck, this tax is placed on globalists, not Americans.

Wouldn't it be unconstitutional to enact a Tobin Tax whose funds went to the UN, even if approved by the Senate? No. The Tobin tax is placed on international financial transactions and occurs outside the jurisdiction and protection of our Constitution. It is a tax on globalists, not American citizens.
To: DrLiberty
UN plans for global dominance left the realm of the academic long ago. By attending this meeting Mr Bush is legitimizing the idea that non-elected, non-US officials have sway over the United States. Especially by attending a meeting about TAXING US CITIZENS AGAINST THEIR WILL, it very much sends the WRONG message to the AMERICAN People.
To: Willie Green
Huh? The tax is only against globalists? It won't hurt US citizens? How about if it takes our citizenship and sovereignty away and forces us into the global communism that everyone in the UN thinks is so cool?
Towards a Socially Responsible and Democratic System of Global Governance (Tobin Tax)
We are now witnessing the collapse of the fundamentalist liberal paradigm in the face of the obvious weakness of an unregulated capital market. It is essential that the world moves towards a socially just and socially responsible globalisation which secures a degree of equity both between and within countries.
The requirement at this time is for the development at a supranational level, both regionally and globally, of those mechanisms of social policy that are no longer adequate if only existing at national level. The need is for:
· regional and global social redistribution· regional and global social regulation· regional and global social empowerment (of poor people and poor countries)
