NO ONE can argue with the notion that teachers should be involved in selecting textbooks, shaping curriculum and setting educational goals.
The teachers should have a major voice, but not the only voice, in these critical decisions.
It is equally important that these decisions be made in a public process with an opportunity for input from everyone with a stake or expertise in public education. And the decisions must be based on what is best for the students.

Expect even more of the multicultural garbage if CTA is granted more power in textbook selection. As bad as it already is, the ethnic cheerleading, romanticizing of Third World cultures as o so authentic and morally equivalent, and depreciation of the West at every opportunity will only get worse. And, don't hold your breath waiting for recent grads of teacher colleges to introduce a degree of balance. Maybe vouchers will have to be packaged with a new name...

Labor negotiations are no place to decide education policy. No, but these kinds of decisions are being taken more and more out of the parents' and the public's hands--all across the country, but especially here in the People's Republic of California (which is one reason I have begun seriously looking for a job back east).

NO ONE can argue with the notion that teachers should be involved in selecting textbooks, shaping curriculum and setting educational goals. Huh? I sure do. They are hired help, not the employer.Ok to listen to them but that is about all.

So when was the last time anyone attended a school board meeting and voiced their opinions concerning the selection of books used?
