Late last year, a male day care employee named "Darryl" followed a 4-year-old boy into the bathroom of a First Hill day care center, sexually assaulted the boy, then warned him not to say a word, court papers say.
But several months later, the boy did -- telling his mother, and later a social worker, about the encounter with the man at Our Place Daycare on East Spring Street.
"He said he's gonna kill me if I tell," court papers say the boy said of his alleged assailant.
Yesterday, authorities said the boy's graphic account, detailed in court papers, led them to Darryl Montise Betties, 34, a former eight-year employee of the day care center run by Catholic Community Services of Western Washington.
On Friday, Betties was charged with first-degree rape of a child.
He is now being held in the King County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, authorities said yesterday.
Investigators have said little about the case. "Detectives are still interviewing children, and that's a very delicate situation," Seattle police spokesman Duane Fish said.
According to court papers, police first became aware of the incident Feb. 23, after the boy's mother called 911 to report what her son had told her earlier that day.
The boy had attended Our Place Daycare from October to Feb. 22, court papers say.
Seattle police Detective Donna Stangeland determined that Betties was "the only male employee at the day care center during the time of the abuse," reads the probable-cause affidavit filed with the court.
Betties quit his job Dec. 14, and no other male employees work there now, the affidavit adds.
Day care employees also told Stangeland that Betties sometimes "covered" for the preschool teacher in the boy's area, and that he had access to the boy, court papers say.
Police later interviewed Betties, who allegedly "admitted that the victim isn't lying, but would not actually state that he sexually abused the victim," the affidavit says.
Yesterday, Jackie O'Ryan, a spokeswoman for Catholic Community Services, declined to comment specifically about the alleged rape or Betties' employment at Our Place on advice from police and prosecutors.
She noted, however, that once day care officials became aware of the boy's account "a couple of weeks ago," they immediately contacted authorities.
"We are fully cooperating with the investigation," she said. "We really feel that the utmost concern here is for the children's safety."
If convicted of the Class A felony, Betties could face from 93 to 123 months in prison.
A teacher in the tradition of William Pitt? A moron and threat to the kids.
Sounds like a clear case for the death penalty to me.
b) We are overdue for someone to come in and blame the child
I think you're reversing the chronology. As I read the story, the Redmond fellow taught (and predated) for decades, became a "hometown Here" and THEN was outed. He was not a known predator when he got the award.
And under the laws of Washington, "this scumbag" will never work in a daycare again, or teach. That is, if he even lives until the end of his sentence.
What a pittiful amount of time to serve for raping an innocent child. Hanging is what he should get.
On February 24, 1996, three light aircraft left Miami on a routine flight. Their missions, to search the waters off the Florida Coast for rafters trying to reach the US shores, and bring them help by guiding the US Coast Guard to their location. That day in February, only one plane would return to its home base in Miami.
