People often ask for an easy description of the District of Columbia, that area of converted swampland that serves as the capital of the United States.
At its best, DC is a microcosm of all that can go wrong in a city where racism rules and political corruption is the norm.
At worst, DC is a pathetic third-world country stuck right here in the good old USA.
Case in point: A decision this week by the DC Boxing Commission to allow a convicted felon and known thug named Mike Tyson to stage one of his mayhem-filled boxing fiascos in Washington, DC.
Tyson convicted rapist, known ear biter and all-around hoodlum is such a despicable thug that even the Nevada Boxing Commission, which has been known to look the other way when enough money is involved, voted earlier this year to keep the heavyweight boxer and his band of criminals out of the state.
So Tyson headed east, to the District, where he is welcomed with open arms.
Forget his rape conviction, overlook his many brushes with the law since he left prison, overlook the melee he started with his next fight opponent just a few weeks ago. All that doesnt matter to a corrupt DC government with dollar signs in its eyes.
DC Mayor Anthony Williams, a joke whod sell his grandmother for anything over five bucks, promoted having Tyson fight in the District as something that would help the economy and promote Washington on the national stage.
Yeah, right. Staging a multimillion-dollar circus around a street thug really enhances the capital of our country. Just what we need when we are fighting an international war against terrorism and condemning senseless violence in other countries.
Williams is so obsessed with money that he would stage mud wrestling in the Mall if it would line the citys coffers. The cheap crook might as well walk around with a For Sale sign penned on his corrupt ass.
But the real reason Williams and his political cronies are so quick to embrace the felonious Mr. Tyson can be summed up in one word.
Race.
Ohmigod, did he say race? He cant say that in these sensitive times.
Yes, race.
Mayor Williams, you see, is a racist, a black racist who will do anything to protect others of his race.
Tyson is black. If he were white, Williams and the DC Boxing Commission would be nailing crosses on the door and lining their windows with garlic.
Early in his administration, Williams quickly dumped a white aide when other blacks in the city claimed he had said something racist (the aide, in fact, was misquoted).
Yet he keeps black aides on his payroll even after they have been caught lying on their resumes, embezzling funds or committing other crimes.
Blacks comprise the largest single ethnic block of the citys population (whites long ago moved to the Maryland and Virginia suburbs). They dominate the city government (no white has ever been elected mayor of the District of Columbia under Home Rule).
As former Washington mayor (and convicted cokehead) Marion Barry once told a reporter, here in the District, we have the duty to reverse decades of discrimination against the black man.
But all that Barry, Williams and their band of petty criminals have proven is that a government dominated by blacks can be every bit as racist as a mob of sheet-wearing rednecks in the Deep South.(Doug Thompson is the founder of Capitol Hill Blue. The Rant appears whenever the mood suits him)
D.C. should be enough all by itself to turn anyone with an income into a hard-right-wing republican, just to escape the city's massive tax burden on anyone who actually works for a living.
Is that a "racist" thing to say? Well, to paraphrase the draft-dodging, white-hating Ali (another black icon), "It ain't racism if'n its true."
