Turkey becomes a permanent member of US anti-drug conference

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turkish Police have announced that Turkey has become a permanent member of the U.S. International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC).

According to a written statement delivered by the Police Press Office, it was recalled that the U.S. International Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been organizing a regional conference, namely IDEC, every year with the participation of Southern, Central and Northern America and Caribbean countries, since 1983. These conferences aim at exchanging information on drugs and preventing drug trafficking by increasing the cooperation and developing regional activities among IDEC members, the statement read.

Turkey was the sole country from the European region which attended the 20th IDEC conference, held between March 5 and 7 this year in Bolivia.

A Turkish mission, including Chief of Police Kemal Onal, Customs Protection General Director Hakki Tekke, Smuggling and Organized Crime Department Chairman Ismail Caliskan and a narcotics expert, attended the conference, as observer.

The statement said that the Turkish mission had delivered a special presentation at the conference on Turkey's studies regarding drug trafficking and enforcement, and evaluated the recent developments in its region. Following the demand of DEA chairman and other members, Turkey became a permanent member of the IDEC.

Regional study groups were also formed during the conference with the participation of neighboring countries in order to determine strategies and measures for the anti-drug fight.

Ping. Looks like Turkey is working to clean it up, while the rest of our EU "allies" sat at home in a state of denial.
