Asimov book reveals he died from AIDS By JAM! Books A forthcoming posthumous autobiography of Isaac Asimov reveals that the science fiction legend's death 10 years ago was due to AIDS, according to the New York Post.

Asimov, whose works include "I, Robot," reveals in "It's Been A Good Life" that he contracted the disease via tainted blood while undergoing a 1983 heart bypass operation.

The Post said Asimov's wife, Jane, compiled the new book from essays and notes her husband left behind when he died at 72.

"However his books on mathematics and physics were gems. "

Did you ever read, "It's Only a Trillion"?
It almost made my head explode one warm Summer afternoon.

The poster clearly relishes the manner of Asimov's death.

He relishes the fact of Asimov's death.  Then the manner of death.
Then he attempts to insinuate a lie as to the manner.
All this in the name of a Deity.  We are not impressed.

".....Telepathy used."

I agree with most of your points, but I don't recall telepathy being used in "Dune".
As I recall, there was an awful lot of scheming going on because telepathy was not an issue.

Yes, thanks. My father, now deceased, had surgery and several transfusions due to bleeding ulcers in the early 80's. That was when the very first articles about HIV infection were appearing. IIRC, the first articles Newsweek and Time had about HIV were around 1983. Until then, it wasn't in the news much.

Disgusting comment! Dr. Asimov was brilliant man and a brilliant author.

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet...

Wallaby's excellent bit of research (with plenty of "real time" cites and science embedded within) … Is the Blood Trade Responsible for the Spread of the AIDS Epidemic?

The first tests that the Red Cross did on all donated blood began in May of 1985, IIRC, and even then they weren't considered totally reliable (still aren't).

Indeed. The first blood screening technology to test directly for HIV and other viruses (previously, blood screening used human antibody tests which are not entirely reliable) was approved by the FDA last month. This will greatly increase the safety of the blood supply by detecting viruses in blood before there is even an immune response (the technology sniffs out viral RNA/DNA that is integral to the virus itself).

Absolutely. If this is true, it's hardly a stretch to imagine, especially as 1983 was well before the blood supply was screened for HIV.

This is 100% true. The blood supply was a mess back then. People who had hemofelia got aids and some got two or three different strains before they knew they were infected. Some younger FR members might not remember the mess. It was a regular pratice for addicts to sneek in and give blood in the 70's and 80's. If they only had AIDS from sharing needles and not other diseases then their blood would get into the system because they never checked for it.

Rememer when it was called GRID--gay-related immunodeficiency disease? Then HTLV. Can't recall what that stood for.

You said it- for a lot of us who admired Asimov's grasp of most of human achievement, and his effortless ease in explaining the tough parts to the rest of us.

My library at home contains several dozen Asimov books, and will have more (my wife buys rare ones for me for presents!)

Human T-Cell Lymphotrophic Virus? Something like that. HTLV-I, HTLV-II, and HTLV-III were all identified, and HTLV-I was HIV, IIRC. One of the others was a leukemia, I think.

Asimov left three volumes of memoirs, which I highly recommend. Here is Asimov on Old Age, from I. Asimov:
Ogden Nash wrote a line that I have always remembered: "The old men know when an old man dies."

With the years this line has become ever more poignant to me. After all, an old person to one who has known him a long time is not an "old person" but is much more likely to be thought of as the younger person who inhabits our memory, vigorous and vibrant. When an old person dies who has been a part of your life, it is part of your youth that dies. And though you survive yourself, you must watch death take away the world of your youth, little by little.

There may be some morbid satisfaction to being a survivor, but is it so much better than death to be the last leaf on the tree, to find yourself alone in a strange and hostile world where no one remembers you as a boy, and where no one can share with you the memory of that long-gone world that glowed all about you when you were young?

Dune parallels the Arab expansion under Omar rather closely.

Disgusting comment! Dr. Asimov was brilliant man and a brilliant author.

He began as a marxist and ended up a democratic humanist who liked the idea of philosopher kings, thought society could be organized and guided from above and the future predicted and controlled (somewhat).

No thanks. Had enough of his type last century. Save us all from "brilliant" men. Books were OK. Kinda mechanistic, humorless and pedantic though.

Assimov wasn't in the same league as Philip K. Dick--the best American writer since Mark Twain.

I dislike that deceiver who got his books into the high school like "Well Spring of Life" that undermind God and man.

Is your God so defective he can't stand up to the scrunity of someone like Asimov? If so,blame your religion or your God,not the man who made their faults obvious to you.

He wrote knowledgeably on just about everything.

I've long thought that Asimov's collected works should be published as one set under the title ... Encyclopedia Galactica.

You want to fight about religion, on a thread about Asimov having the HIV infection? Why don't you start your own thread?
