McAulife Purge and Gore's Out

McAuliffe cleans house and Gore's out

Last year there was a relatively major dispute in the Democratic National Committee regarding the election of Terry McAuliffe as chairman. In particular, some African-Americans objected to electing a white leader and supported former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson. There was quite a fracas for a couple of days before a compromise was reached and Jackson was appointed to lead something called the Voting Rights Institute in the DNC. This article at NationalReview.com describes the struggle pretty well.

Well, here we are about a year later and Jackson is out as the head of the VRI and Donna Brazile (Al Gore's campaign manager) has taken over. Brazile also promised to stay neutral in the 2004 primaries.

What does all of this mean? For the DNC, it means that McAuliffe has cleaned house and has eliminated the remnants of last year's power struggle. The article doesn't say where Jackson has gone, but the DNC web page offers this statement from McAuliffe:

"I would first like to thank Maynard Jackson for his tremendous leadership and tireless work on behalf of the Democratic Party. Under the leadership of Donna Brazile, we will continue to build on the solid foundation created by Maynard and the staff of the Voting Rights Institute. Maynard has been and will continue to be a powerful advocate and dynamic member of our Party," said Chairman McAuliffe.
If that isn't a statement accompanying a purge, I don't know politics. So McAuliffe bought peace for a year and now has shuffled Jackson out of the picture. Moreover, he's replaced him with another African-American so no one can complain.

For Al Gore, assuming Brazile is true to her word, it's really bad news. Gore has already lost quite a few of his prominent campaign staffers to Edwards and Kerry. Some had speculated that a recent Gore/Brazile meeting was to make sure that she stayed on the Gore team. This decision follows that reported meeting so closely, that I wonder if Gore told her that he's planning on sitting out the 2004 election and she decided to sit on the sidelines for a while. I guess another alternative is that Gore told her that he's going to run and she decided to use this job as an excuse to stay out of a 2004 campaign. Either way, it's not good for the Re-elect Gore in '04 crowd.

You don't find it interesting that Maynard Jackson has been forced out already? You aren't interested in who is going to run in 2004?

It doesn't matter who runs in 2004, it's just going to be another pinko commie socialist who has nothing but contempt for America. All Democrats are socialists, the only differences between them are the levels of severity.
