Major appliances such as a refrigerator or a washer-dryer pair could cost $3 to $5 more as a result of tariffs President Bush is imposing on steel products this month.
Gerard said the price of a large sports utility vehicle with a sticker price of $50,000 could cost $35 more. Well, here's some figures to get worked up over. $3.00? $5.00?
Oh, the horror!

Cost of the items isn't the real concern, we are sacrificing employment and paying a big price for it to create the tariffs.
To: Tumbleweed_Connection

Can someone site a case where a tarrif or quota DID NOT result in a price increase? It's what the benefactors want. It's what they couldn't get done on their own. It's what they couldn't get done without a guvament hand-out.
Higher prices, even artifically higher prices like we have here, supposedly lead to higher profits which enable the benefactors to demand higher wages. Gee, sounds inflationary, doesn't it?
So, is anyone really surprised that prices will rise? DUH!!

Sure, $3-$5 sounds trivial, but consider how many little pieces go into an appliance. Consider this; my company makes appliance parts that cost about $0.05 each (millions and millions of them). Steel makes up about $0.03 of that cost. Early industry rumblings are saying that fabbed steel prices may go from $0.25/lb. to $0.40/lb. very shortly. That little incriment makes the difference between good profit and serious loss. Not quite so trivial at this end of the pond.

Sure, $3-$5 sounds trivial, but consider how many little pieces go into an appliance OK, I will..............
Now if all of those pieces raise the price of the appliance $3.00-$5.00, it's because you in turn raised them on your end and passed on the increased cost.
And yes, it still sounds trivial.

There is no such thing as a price increase in this business.

My newspaper says the tarrifs will raise steel prices about ONE PERCENT. I'll pay that to create jobs anyday. The libs blow this out of site so they can scream BIG BUSINESS GRAFT.
To: Cable225
Wait until we start seeing retaliatory tariffs.
To: Uncle George
This is Union graft.
To: Uncle George
What jobs do you think you are creating?
To: Tumbleweed_Connection
Steelworkers say that is a small price to save American jobs and an industry that once was the backbone of U.S. commerce. But what about the many more jobs that are going to be lost than are saved?
This move by the President was not smart economics.

That's my concern, we must break away from the damn tariffs at some point.
To: DancesWithTrout
There is no such thing as a price increase in this business. Why's that? Do you have competitors who won't be affected by the tariffs (a non-level playing field)? Or, do you typically sign long-term contracts that lock in your selling price?
Either way, you're just not paying your lobbyists (or your elected officials in D.C.) enough.

Well, here's some figures to get worked up over. $3.00? $5.00?
Three dollars of my money that goes to the corrupt unions so they can help Democrats get elected.
Thanks, but Id rather keep my five bucks.

Oh sure, a dollar here, a dollar there, who cares?. Add 1%to the sales tax, that's peanuts, no big deal, right?
Anyways, why are you so quick as to believe the "$3-$5" figure? Remember, those are numbers quoted by the one's who have the most to gain from the tax hike.
To: Republican Wildcat
It's politics. Bush won the election because Clinton didn't raise the tarrif. WV remembered this and Gore paid.
To: Cable225
The increases will only affect *U.S.*-made products, not foreign products. How is that going to help the U.S. economy?
