Swiss Voters Narrowly OK Joining U.N.

GENEVA (AP) - Swiss voters approved joining the United Nations (news - web sites) on Sunday, finding the prospect of a greater role in today's interlinked world more compelling than fears that it would threaten the nation's centuries-old tradition of neutrality.

At first, I thought the Swiss had to do a supermajority in order to pass something, instead of just a bare majority.

Too bad. I guess there won't be a safe haven for the next war, not like that mattered to some WW2 Jews.

About 15 years ago, I made a bet with someone that Switzerland would be the World/UN Capitol within 50 years. That bet is looking better these days.

Switzerland may have the right idea, self-serving as it may be. Washington, DC, has been the seat of power in the US for a long time, but was so easily accesible by the commoners that a cheap, inefficient labour market grew up around the city. That can't happen in Switzerland, it's so damned hard to get there for poor people.

Safe havens are never extended to all (you should know that)...as the rich almost always manage to safely escape danger...many times with the property of the not-so rich stuffed in their bulging pockets.
