It's cold down here in Dallas. Very, very cold. Supposed to be in upper fifties tomorrow though.

Drudge talking mainly about the Time Mag article that gov't thought there was a credible nuclear threat against NYC.

He's throwing out the idea that the public should have been warned. Wonder what he thinks everyone would have done ... gone to their storm cellars?

I mean, my son lives on Texoma which is tornado alley and he and his wife have a storm cellar which she insisted on, and which they've never been in.

All of the former tyrants of the media (the ABC's et al and the daily newspapers) are afraid of Drudge and of the net. Sites like this one, for example.

They have reason to be. Viewership is down and newspaper subscription is also.

IN fact, Dallas Morning News would be down one subscriber if I could bear to be without a daily newspaper, but that day may come. I sure don't read it for the news.

Did you hear Drudge on the Spanish-language candidates' debate in Dallas?

True story: When Drudge broke the Lewinsky story, I happened to be working at a newspaper. We and the rest of the world obviously were scooped, but our paper was even a day later than many other papers on publishing the news. The publisher had decreed that only local news could go on the front page, and the national-news page had already been sent to film when the story broke. The guy who was wire editor would have feared for his job if he put it on the front page and bumped some local story. The publisher later said that "we" dropped the ball on this.

We might as well have just gone out and bought a buggy-whip factory.

That's a tough call on whether to go public with such a warning. I think a lot depends on how high their confidence is in the threat.

If they thought the threat was real, then I would come down on the side of full disclosure and let each New Yorker decide what to do. My guess is that most would have stayed and gone about their business.

I'd like to know if any government officials left NYC or stayed away from NYC as a result of this information.

I don't think the mainstream media will completely go away - people will still want local news - but they need to get over themselves and not think in lockstep with the government agencies they cover.
