March 02, 2002 04:53 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. warplanes on Saturday dropped two extremely accurate, 2,000-pound "thermobaric" bombs into caves in eastern Afghanistan where al Qaeda and Taliban fighters were believed to be hiding, U.S. defense officials said.
The recently developed American bombs are filled with a special explosive mixture that creates a high-pressure blast, driving all of the air out of a cave and potentially suffocating those inside.
The defense officials, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters that two of the bombs were used in support of a major attack by Afghan forces and both U.S. and other coalition troops against regrouping al Qaeda and Taliban south of Gardez in eastern Afghanistan.
Only a very few of the bombs, which use a mixture of fuel in their explosive and recently have been equipped with laser designators to allow them to penetrate cave openings, have been used in the war. The bombs create major air pressure while causing little physical damage.

The bombs create major air pressure while causing little physical damage. Little damage to the cave, I presume. :)

Lets hope we don't wind up spending 10 years trying to flush out the last remaining fighters in the mts along the border with Pak........like the Soviets did.

Thanks, I never could figure out what those things meant.
I actually thought some of them were like cheers. LOL LOL

According to what I've seen and read in the papers (and also heard on a Pentagon briefing) the US has been watching the build-up of formerly dispersed al Qaida forces in this area for several weeks. It was reported that the Afghan units with the US special forces unit were on a training mission or were being given battle field training by US special forces by going up against the al Qaida army.
I believe that is BS. The US was watching the al Qaida build up for some time; waiting for them all to dig in at one place. The Afghan "training misson" was just a feint, intended to draw the al Qaida units out of hiding so the 101st could pounce them -- with a later follow up by AC-130 gunships and B-52s.
I'm glad Geraldo is missing it all.

Little damage to the cave, I presume. :) They were "die hard" soldiers and they died... Hard!

>What the hell happened here....we walked into a vipers nest??
Now we know where the vipers are.

Sounds like Al Qaeda is coordinating their attacks with Daschle, Byrd, Hollings and Gephardt. Ouch! C'mon, Mole......these guys may be chumps, but they wouldn't shake hands with the fetid Al-Q'aeda.

>This is what happens when the local warlords release their taliban prisoners.
Not going to happen this time.

>I somehow doubt the US-backed troops, aided by air power, were "beaten" as the anti-US American press (as well as others) are reporting it.
The press needs to read Sun Tzu, but then they are craving a quagmire, a disaster or something they can cheer about.
