"You just can't charge the consumer anything you want," said Riordan. "So I believe there has to be regulation on the consumer end. I don't believe you need it on the other end." That's exactly what got us into the mess in the first place. Consumer rates were fixed while wholesale rates could grow to the sky. The result: utilities forced to sell power at a loss, so they went belly-up. Riordan, if you're elected, you'll be Gray Davis redux.

The three main Republican candidates for governor want to push forward with a corrected version of electricity deregulation, but only businessman Bill Simon advocates something like deregulation in its purest form. That settles it. I'll be voting for Simon. Only a very principled candidate would even think of advocating libertarian deregulation in face of the massive demagoguing that's been done on the topic.
