Driver's Licenses To Be Easier For Foreigners

Governor Plans To Sign Bill Thursday

Posted: 8:53 a.m. MST February 28, 2002

SANTA FE, N.M. -- It will soon be easier for Mexicans and other foreigners living in the state to get a driver's license.

A measure to allow the Motor Vehicle Division to accept documents other than a Social Security number as identification when someone applies for a New Mexico driver's license is before Gov. Johnson.

Johnson plans to sign the bill Thursday during a ceremony in his office.

Supporters said the measure will help people from Mexico who are living and working in the state.

By making it easier for foreigners to obtain a New Mexico driver's license, it also will help them register and insure their vehicles.

Well, now they can vote too, because motor voter forbids the asking of proof of citizenship before registering to vote. Should make for more democRAT voters.

So what they are saying is that right now there are a lot of mexicans driving uninsured, unregistered vehicles without a license...that just makes me all warm and fuzzy.

This doesn't make sense. There is nothing to prevent a citizen of a foreign country from getting a US drivers license. They legitimately do it all the time (the problem is when the license does not expire with the visa).

This bill must have something else in it.

Did they not get a driver's license in Mexico? I mean really, what is the point..? To allow non-citizens to vote in our elections! And just what "other" documents would be acceptable?

Supporters? No doubt guilt liberals and the money behind them - the "business" community, especially trucking companies. Another attack on the middle class American citizens. New Mexico will become the new Tennessee for terrorist I.D.'s.

There are a lot of "gringos" living in New Mexico. It is a state of the United States. Do you know what a "gringo" is? The substance of the word, where it came from?

Don't you need a Social Security card/number to get a drivers license? If they're not issuing a Social Security card to these illegals, how does that add up? Any way you look at this one, it should be challenged in court immediately.

Stop the insanity!

A Mexican national can register a car in Mexicio and then legally drive it into the United States.

A Mexican national can apply for a driver's license in Mexico and then use that license to apply for an international driver's license with which they can then legally drive in the United States.

Also, using their international driver's license, a Mexican national can get auto insurance in the United States.

So a Mexican national living in the United States has no need to apply for a driver's license from one of our 50 states.

No social security proof is required in Tennessee. All you have to have is some document like an electric bill and you are in. Of course these are so easy to forge it's laughable.

One thing worries me. When all of this came up at last week's Governor's conference, our Governor, Don Sundquist, was supposedly told by Tom Ridge not to do anything yet to change the current setup. Do you suppose the Bush administartion is going to push for licenses for illegals at the Federal level?

Really? No Social Security number required in Tennessee for a drivers license? That probably won't last much longer. Practically every state now has that requirement. They're trying to back-door the national ID card.

Unfortunately, no Social Security numer is required in Tennessee and the Governor says he is not going to change. Of course that is why we ended up with 5 alleged terrorists in Memphis. They drove from New York to Memphis because they knew Tennessee was such a soft touch. They were indicted this week and are under 23 hour lockdown.

I agree with you. Like it or not, I think a national i.d. is on the way.
