Riordan Urged U.S. Senate to Pass Record Clinton Tax Increase
Joined Liberal Democrat Mayor of Detroit in Criticizing Bush Tax Cut
STOCKTON - With his campaign continuing to gain momentum just days before the March 5 primary, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon today offered more compelling evidence demonstrating the clear differences between his conservative positions and the liberal record of former Los Angeles Mayor Dick Riordan.
"Since the day I began my campaign for Governor, I have run a campaign grounded in the basic Republican principles of smaller government and less taxes," Simon said. "My opponent Dick Riordan has tried to say the same things, but the record shows that Dick's claims are not backed up by his actions.
"In 1993, Dick Riordan not only said he would support President Clinton's record $241 million tax increase, but actually sent a letter to Senate leaders urging them to support the President's 'economic programs'. Dick likes to say his fiscal thinking is in-line with the Republican Party, but not a single Republican in Congress, not even liberal Jim Jeffords, supported Clinton's massive tax increase," Simon said.
"In 2001, Dick refused to defend President George W. Bush's proposed tax cut, instead saying he agreed '100 percent' with criticism leveled by liberal Democrat Mayor Dennis Archer of Detroit," Simon said. "Given his support of the massive Clinton tax increase, and his joining in the criticism of George W. Bush's tax cut, it is no wonder the state's leading taxpayer organizations-the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the California Tax Limitation Committee- have enthusiastically endorsed my campaign.
"Republican voters across the state are learning more about my sound, conservative plans to solve the state's budget crisis and jump start California's sagging economy without raising taxes," said Simon. "And they are learning more about Dick Riordan's record of supporting tax hikes, like the massive tax hike authored by Bill Clinton and opposed by every single Republican member of Congress. On taxes, the choice next Tuesday is clear."

Go Simon!
Shouldn't that be "billion", not "million"?
That would be billion. I think somebody was reading a graph in thousands. This has to be fixed.
I can just feel it. The Mrs. wanted to make sure her absentee ballot went in . . . it did . . . with mine. If Simon wasn't running, Bill Jones would be okay, but Tricky Dick II would have us both voting Libertarian come November.
Good point. Thanks ... I skimmed the email when I received it, didn't notice the error.
Go Simon!
Go Simon!
The general election agains Davis will be different because in that case I think Bill feels a sense of moral outrage against the malfeasance of the Davis adminstration. It wouldn't be attacking a person with whom he has cordial relationships as he has had with Dickypoo. Again, it will be natural to him and you won't put strain all over his face over what he might see as a necessary evil. It's still evil, and his well-developed conscience knows it.
Still, you need to keep him out of the muck or too much of it will stick. The media are fully capable of turning it into a tar baby. Never mud wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.
I don't like attacks, but I do like comparisons and I think that's what Simon is doing. It's important to point out Riordan's opposition to everything Republican. The one thing the Riordan supporters have been saying is that he is a fiscal conservative, etc., etc. Well, he's not and never has been and Republicans deserve to know that so they don't get suckered into voting for him because of the MYTH that he is the only one who can beat Davis.
You and I both know that only a candidate who offers a clear contrast to liberal Gray Davis, who is smart and articulate, and who is compassionate and doesn't have the hard edge of Lungren and Jones, can beat Davis. Bill Simon is that man.
By the way, according to the Field Poll, Simon is winning among women over Riordan by 10 points.
Go Simon!
