This is an assignment my 8th grade son brought home: Object: Students will be able to explain the serious meaning behind a facetious figurative statement.

A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged.

A liberal is a conservative who's been wrongly arrested.

Where you stand depends on where you sit

Your assignment: based on what you infer from the above statements, write the opinions the writer would expect from a liberal...........a conservative

Judging by that comment I assume I put this in the wrong Category, if so I apologize I am not sure I mentioned this was an English assignment. It just seemed absurd to me so I figured if I threw it out there it would become evident if it was me who is a little off or the teacher. Thanks again all

You're right, the question is extremely poorly worded (not surprising, given that my German Shepherd is smarter than the average 8th grade teacher.)

I think what he/she is asking is, if someone makes these three statements, what can you infer about his opinion of liberals and conservatives?. An appropriate answer would be something like this:
The writer believes that liberals favor strong rights for those accused of crimes, based on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The writer believes that conservatives are tough on crime and want harsh punishment for criminals.

Your son's eighth grade teacher has it wrong. A conservative is a fellow that would let you fix your own toilet, but not rob a gas station. A liberal won't let you fix your toilet, but sees no problem if you rob a gas station.

Your kids teacher is pulling a con on the kids. She's advancing the ideas that you can never know the truth about any particular incident, muggers aren't bad people they're just poor and oppressed, and conservatives are mean. They are attempting to transform your kid into a lamb. Sheep's what they're after and sheep's what they're getting.

You needen't apologize. It's just that sometimes this is a poor place to seek rational answers. Most are here just to play games. It wasn't always this way...but, I guess everything degrades over time. Even FR. Home schooling is really the answer.
