It gives a quick, intuitive feel for the difference between liberals, conservatives, authoritarians, libertarians, and centrists.

People get confused a lot because they try to fit complex concepts onto one-dimensional maps (liberal/conservative, or left/right, or good/evil, etc.), when often the situation consists of more than one "variable". As this link shows, political views are more clearly understood when viewed on a two-dimensional map than a one-dimensional one.
