IMHO, Where Eagles Dare, was too over the top....by that time MacLean was writing for commerical success....of all his books, and they're all good reads for a rainy day, his first..HMS ULysses...which was never made into a film..was far and away his best......the LAST chapter, about 5 pages, can be read alone...
