Try this. Watch Zulu and pay attention to the Zulu war chants just prior to the final assault. The ones where the British soldiers sing 'March of the Men of Harlech' to drown them out. Then watch the opening battle scenes from Gladiator where the barbarian army does the same thing. I swear that they sound exactly alike.

How could we forget all the great John Ford movies.......She wore a yellow ribbon, Fort Apache, The Horse Soldiers,

also, do you remember "They were expendable"..the story of the PT boats in WW II?

Don't forget to show them some books, too. You know, those things with words in them instead of sound and pictures? Maybe Cicero or Epictetus or McCullough's John Adams. Plenty of good lessons about sacrifice and patriotism in there. But it'll take more than 90 minutes of passive participation.

You might want to include movies that tell the story of WW2, from the homefront.
"Mrs. Miniver" and "The Best Years of Our Lives" are two of the best.

IMHO, Where Eagles Dare, was too over the top....by that time MacLean was writing for commerical success....of all his books, and they're all good reads for a rainy day, his first..HMS ULysses...which was never made into a film..was far and away his best......the LAST chapter, about 5 pages, can be read alone...

I found some good lessons in the book, The Ugly American. These lessons were repeated in training sessions for SF and others!

I didn't forget them. Although I greatly admire Ford, I'm not that much of a fan of his "cavalry trilogy", except for the absolutely brilliant Fort Apache, which would have been on my list, had I not included They Died With Their Boots On. IMHO, Col. Thursby (Henry Fonda) in "Fort Apache" is a thinnly veiled version of Custer, memorably portrayed by Errol Flynn in "Boots On."

Right you are, YY...TBYOOL is great film....the scene, in the beginning,where they are flying over the field of thousands of mothballed airplanes is spectacular...The actor who played the double amputee just died last month, his obituary was in the Times...he lost his arms in a training accident..

Here's another for ya....."The Cruel Sea"..by Nicholas Monserrat....both the book and the movie....probably the finest depiction of the early stages of the Uboat war in the Atlantic.......and one of the best of the obviously "propaganda" films....."In Which We Serve"..starring and directed by Noel Coward...

You are absolutely right and I'm chagrined that I forgot that one! Also, for court-martial movies, you can't beat The Caine Mutiny for both portraying the pressures of combat and general atmosphere.

I rarely watch a movie over again but the one that I do in that vein is "The Bridge on the River Kwai".

I watch "Battlefield" every time it comes on.

But he had it in the sack for a duration of the trip.

Wasn't Walter Brennan in that movie as well? And a young Henry Fonda?
