Is it true that the entire Russian team was made up of NHL players too? If so, what we just saw was basically an NHL All-Star game. Twenty-two years ago, I was 17 years old and watched the entire Olympic run. Much different world back then. There wasn't any cable or VCR's, so you only had one shot to see the games, otherwise you would be stuck with highlights. I think they might have shown the Russia game on tape delay but I'm not sure. But it's hard to believe that it was 22 years tonight that the USA beat Russia. It was such a big deal then. I remember going to Winthrop and seeing Mike Euruzione's parade. Must have been a million people there. They talked back then of the USA last winning the gold medal in hockey in 1960 twenty years earlier. To me at the time, 1960 was ancient history. People who could remember that were old! Now here I am 22 years later and feeling old myself.

BTW, who did USA have to play that Sunday to win the Gold medal? I think it might have been Sweden.

Breaking news....Russia already has their protest drawn up...

You laugh, but $5 says they protest the game. And my bet is that they'll claim that Roenick was in the crease when he fell on that one shot.

Any takers? Who wants to guess what they'll protest about?

It was Finland and I remember watching that game on the edge of my seat.

That weekend was a special moment for the country.

Naa. They will protest that it was NHL refereeing.

That too - I've already seen some b*tching about the NHL referees on other threads, from our Eastern Bloc members.

Let's split the difference - they'll claim that the referees were biased towards the US, and therefore didn't call Roenick for falling on the puck in the crease, which would have given the Russkies a penalty shot...

Indeed it was. I still think that it was the greatest upset in sports history. Bunch of college kids take on the big, bad, Soviet Union. Who, BTW, were really pros. That was the whole idea back then. The olympics were supposed to be amatures. So we take em on with our kids. AND WIN! What a thrill. I still remember that. That was something that will never be repeated. Gone With The Wind.

I remember it pretty well. I was 32 and living in Madison, WI. There were a couple of Badgers on that Miracle Team. I was running at the Camp Randall Shell that evening and I went outside and heard that the US had won, I went inside and told everyone I saw the grand news. The liberal bitches there got real bent out of shape because the mean old American pigs had beaten their heros! The US beat Finland for the gold.

Remember, that American Team was made up of college players. The Russians had all of the Pros, but that was before they were allowed to leave Mother Russia to participate in the Capitalist NHL.

This was a great game, but 22 years ago, that was A Miracle!
