I'm pretty sure that some of them belonged to another group and or groups, among them Sabbean and Manichean, and Osseans etc. The comment about not being accepted as a prophet by the Jews might be on the money though. And would explain some of the intense hatred the muslims have towards the Jews.

I'm pretty sure that some of them belonged to another group and or groups, among them Sabbean and Manichean, and Osseans etc. You are obviously better informed than I about who the predecessors were. I am just not familiar with the groups they belonged to, but his followers were people who were indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula in the early seventh century.
