"Who is Bill Simon?" An anti-Simon ad hit TV tonight - paid for by Riordan
local TV ^ | Feb. 20, 02 | churchillbuff

The TV ad started out by asking, "Who is Bill Simon?" Then it talks about some kind of bankruptcy thing involving a business he was with apparently. I expected to see "Paid for by Gray Davis" but instead, a smiling RIORDAN is flashed across the screen.

This tells me the Riordan people are wetting their pants over Simon's momentum. Guess the primary isn't gonna be a Riordan slam-dunk after all.

Now if only McCainiac Bill Jones would do the honorable thing and drop out, Riordan's hope of benefitting from a splintered conservative vote would be dashed.

McCaniac and conservative should not be used in the same sentence =o)

RearEnd is an embarrassment to the party, heck either party and that says a lot

See also this for a new Jones attack

It seems everyone has to fear the Simon rollercoaster. It's good to know that a conservative is doing so well in California, isn't it?

Indeed it is. Come on folks. We know you're out there.....come out of the conservative closet now, and take this state back. Go to Simon's web site & sign up for his email newsletter. I don't have the address right here, but it's probably easy to find.

Yep, heard about the ad, and it's about some investment in a failed Savings & Loan. Funny thing ... it wasn't Simon, Jr ... but Simon, Sr! If Nancy Daly Riordan and her Democrat dealings in Maryland are off-limits, shouldn't attacking Simon's deceased father be off-limits as well?

Obviously, Riordan is getting VERY worried about Mr. Simon!

Go Simon!!!!

Simon has been somewhat reluctant to go after Riordan, I guess because of mutual connections.

Oooooo, I can't wait to see the response if that's the case. I'm willing to bet that any reticance that Mr. Simon has about going after Riordan just evaporated.

Much as I hate to see these types of ads in the republican primaries, I want to see that a candidate can effectively counter them. If a candidate can't counter them in the primary, they are toast in the general election.

It is an uphill fight for Simon, but a fight worth fighting.

That Reardon smears everyone, doesn't he? Watch him sink his ship, while Simon sinks a few baskets and scores.

When are the professional handlers going to learn? Having it up front beats getting blindsided and then explaining it to everybody. I shouldn't have to keep doing this.

Here is a great series of articles that explains how it is that Riordan told Simon to run and then ran himself. Gerry Parsky, Chair of the California Republican Party (and put there by Carl Rove's butt boys Brooks Firestone and Michael (aka Arianna) Huffingtron) put him up to it:

Reorganization: California’s GOP
Would it professionalize the state Party?
Or submerge it?

Here is a little quote just to tantalize you...

Parsky commutes to work via Gulfstream jet from his home in Rancho Santa Fe to his office in Westwood. After serving as the youngest ever assistant secretary of the treasury, Parsky went on to become a multi-millionaire venture capitalist investor with international clients, widespread clout, and what one recent commentator characterized as “a smooth ability to withstand any controversy or legal difficulties such work is known to create.” Indeed — a survivor. One such “difficulty” involved one of those international clients, Saudi Prince Nawaf Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. As reported in the April 2000 Vanity Fair, Parsky, while with Gibson, Dunn, found companies and property for Middle East clients to buy, with the law firm handling the legal work involved in the acquisitions. Parsky was credited with bringing an estimated $80 million in new business to the firm. But “just months after leaving Gibson, Dunn,” according to Vanity Fair:
The prince accused Parsky of steering him to bad real- estate investments in which Parsky or his Gibson, Dunn colleagues and clients had hidden interests, including one in which Parsky personally had an ownership stake. Parsky denied that he profited from the sale, but, as Forbes reported, he also refused to produce related documents. In July of 1991, a reported $20 million settlement, involving the repurchase from him of certain properties and the reimbursement of certain loans, was reached with the prince. Three WSGP [a partnership Parsky had formed with former Treasury Secretary William Simon] partners refused at the time to participate in the payback because, they implied, Parsky was the responsible party. The settlement, they felt, was as good as an admission of guilt. Simon did participate fully in the settlement, but two months later abruptly pulled out of WSGP, causing the collapse of a $300 million deal that was soon to close. “I totally lost trust and confidence in Gerald L. Parsky and no longer wished to be associated with him either professionally or personally,” Simon stated.
When are the professional handlers going to learn?

Please note that the William E. Simon in the above post is the gubernatorial candidate's father and President Ford's Secretary of the Treasury.

No, it was, however, the start of the bad blood between the Simon family and the guy who committed the Party to a riordan candidacy: Parsky. The story presents a motive for the ad from the Parsky reardon perspective. I am sure Simon has stayed away from it because he wants Party support in the general election. HOWEVER, to keep things above board prevents the need for the appearance of a defensive posture against this kind of ad. Perhaps it would have been better to make the stink early and demand a change in the Party leadership after the primary.

If feardon wins and then loses to Davis, George Bush had better fire Rove. The problem is that it will then be too late for the Republican Party in California, if it isn't already. This is clearly our last chance to save it.
