To hell with PC moviemaking. We need a modern update of "Tobacco Road". And maybe some more Amos and Andy segments.

see, for instance, Spike Lee’s film "Jungle Fever"

I don't much care for Mr. Lee's politics, but I have to give him credit for making films where there are racists that DON'T have southern accents.

"You can insult Southerners with impunity, while everyone else is off limits."

Nope, Catholics, too. As I am both, I am constantly offended.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is set in Alabama and is full of southerners whose ideas of right and wrong and justice and injustice were colorblind. At a time when those ideas were hard to find, north or south.

I spent the weekend with my Dad, who lives in Laguna Beach CA, and works in the Laguna Nigel post office. He was born and raised in South Carolina and has never lost accent despite having lived in California for a decade. Yesterday he told me that, while at work at the post office, he had been approached by some hollywood type who told my dad that he had the perfect voice for a cartoon the hollywood type was working on, and wanted my dad to go to hollywood for an audition. My dad unloaded on the hollywood dude. "I'll be damned if you're going to use my voice to make fun of the south! Not for all the money in hollywood! Get out of here!"

I am so proud of my dad.

Ang Lee’s "Ride With the Devil" is a masterful tale of Civil War brutality. It plays fair with both sides and includes a wonderful speech in which a Southerner explains why the South cannot win the war. (It boils down to the North’s puritanical impulse to "improve" the world, never mind what those to be improved may think. Against that, the South’s desire merely to be left alone is no match.)

An excellent film!! For more discussion of RWTD, click here

If anyone is interested in a movie that tells the side of the South during the Civil war, Go to the video store and rent The Outlaw Josie Wales. It was directed by Clint Eastwood. He also plays the title role. I think it's one of the best movies ever made. Besides being a great movie, you'll have a pocket full of one liners that most people have never heard.

"When so-called Civil Rights organizations have nothing better to do than attack Confederate monuments and drive barbecue baron Maurice Bessinger to the brink of bankruptcy, you know there are no real race problems left in the South."

The latest offender is the Oscar-nominated film "Monster’s Ball," starring Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton.
Married to Angelina Jolie and doing a movie with Halle Berry. He better never be heard whining about anything. >:)

(Not specifically to "Magician," I just used the Reply button under his post...).

"Ang Lee’s "Ride With the Devil" is a masterful tale of Civil War brutality. It plays fair with both sides and includes a wonderful speech in which a Southerner explains why the South cannot win the war. (It boils down to the North’s puritanical impulse to "improve" the world, never mind what those to be improved may think. Against that, the South’s desire merely to be left alone is no match.)"

There is some irony in the above statement. By the 1860s the "elite" in the North had jettisoned their Biblical and Puritan theological heritage and had adopted heretical Unitarianism and, yes, even then, humanistic liberalism. They believed in the "perfectablility" of man and society (largely through the power of the state).

The Puritans were Reformed and held to the utter depravity of man and that only God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ can renew the man from within.

The South, then and to some measure now, held to the Biblical doctrine of man's utter depravity and as such to limited government and personal freedom under God and in accordance with the liberty of the Gospel.

The South held to Constitutional principles and Biblical doctrines (but they had slaves!), the North fought on the premise of society's perfectability and the power of the Almighty State to accomplish it.

The South is hated by the gatekeepers of the media, essentially cosmopolitan, elitest Jews, that cannot stand the notion of what the South actually stood for and it wasn't about slavery. By the late 1850s everyone realized the institution's days were numbered.

Limited government, staunchly Christian religious views, a uniquely sovereign American culture, family, and essentially everything the Jewish Communists that control the media hold in contempt.

To even say this truth is, of course, to be a "Nazi" (I hate National Socialism and all socialisms, and advocate the Constitution of the United States, limited government, and justice under law for all people) and "antisemitic" (my mother was Jewish and I am legally able to claim right of return to Israel as a Jew), and a host of other things, even to being accused of listening to Rush Limbaugh (Satan incarnate, of course) and holding views like Pat Buchanan (oh my!).

The Emperor has no new clothes.

This guy isn't seeing the same movies I am. From "My Cousin Vinnie" to "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" to "Sweet H?ome Alabama" (and bunches of titles in between), the South doesn't look bad at all - and is redeemed as the home of folks who are pretty decent.
