February 18, 2002 -- Investigators trying to unravel the past of alleged airplane shoe bomber Richard Reid have been focusing on his ties with an extensive ring of al Qaeda terror suspects based in Europe.

Probers have been helped by a stash of prepaid telephone cards used by Reid, Time magazine reported today.
