REALITY MACEDONIA

Sacrilege of St. Petka Church in Gostivar's village Galate

Citizens of Galate, and wider Gostivar area were shocked after the attempt to blow up the church St.Petka. On the 9th of February, 15 minutes after midnight, unknown terrorists made an attempt to mine the church and destroy it.

Yesterday, teams of Gostivar police and the sector for antiterrorism from Ministry of Internal Affairs, accompanied by NATO's "amber fox" troops and OSCE observers, inspected the crime scene. They discovered 400 grams of unexploded explosive with mine's capsule and slowly burning fuse on one of the windows of the church. The fuse was lighted, but couldn't reach the capsule, because the fuse was cut. Another piece of explosive, placed at the base of the concrete pillar of the church, was activated and created a crater about one meter wide.

The unknown terrorists broke the doors and entered into the church by force, and vandalized the frescoes by bursts of fire from automatic weapons.

It's fascinating how the Albanian destruction of churches in Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania proper earns so little attention in the US press. If you're like me, then you can recall decades of media coverage where as much as five minutes of a half-hour news program would be devoted to the latest incident of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery. It mattered little whether the incident took place in a big city in the US, or a small town in southern France, it would earn a major evening news spot.

But when it comes to Muslims destroying the holiest and most ancient churches in the Orthodox world (some 107 churches have been destroyed in Kosovo in the last two years), there is hardly a word.

Ah, that picture...quite an artfully done, futurist picture.
