As I've said before, I'll say again: libertarianism would work fine in a society comprising highly moral, self-disciplined, God-fearing people.
On balance our society no longer meets that criteria, and on the whole the Libertarian Party is ruled by men and women who spurn and ridicule such indispensible notions as Judeo-Christian based morality.
The Libertarian Party has a fine automobile, but no engine; a comely body, but no soul. All it is fit for is self-indulgent rust and decay.
Treat people like children and they'll act like children. Treat them like subjects and they'll act like subject.
Or they'll revolt.
The Libertarians didn't do this out of the goodness of their hearts as evidenced by this statement from the article:
"Even bigots have rights," said [Santa Barbara LP Secretary Robert Bakhaus].
I just wanted to point out that we aren't about promoting homosexuality, or sinful behavior in general, as we are constantly accused. I doubt gays in California right now would suggest we do.
The reason this occured isn't because a blind squirrel found a nut. It's due to principled defense of liberty for everyone.
Our government no longer meets that criteria, and on whole the Republican/Democratic parties are ruled by those who spurn & ridicule freedom.
Their success is continued by willing slaves.
Do you prefer to be called Toby, or Kunte-Kinte?
-- Of course it would kevin.
-- But the true genius of our constitutional republic would be realised if it's basic libertarian principles were reinstated and honored by courts & government officials.
We would then have a society that worked, --- dispite immoral, undisciplined, irreligious people.
Self interest & fair treatment under minimal law work. Our nearly hundred year experiment in big brother government has not.
Spoken from what you stand for? Does the right of an individual or a group have to be intrusted to ones grovernment?
On balance our society no longer meets that criteria, and on the whole the Libertarian Party is ruled by men and women who spurn and ridicule such indispensible notions as Judeo-Christian based morality.
Many libertarians say that despite this, a more libertarian government would provide no remedy for demonstrably poor or detrimental behaviors (no government funded drug-treatment, reduced or eliminated welfare, no state supplied healthcare, to name a few) and therefore act as a social selection process. One that would require the best behaviors to naturally evolve from individual necessity. Do you think this has merit?
You have it ass backwards as usual. Only such perfect people could be entrusted with the sort of power you wish to give to government. With the real people we have in the world as it actually exists, government must be denied all power beyond the bare minimum.
Weaken the grip of the law, return responsibility to the individual, and watch people as a whole, correct most of the things I am sure you think of as wrong. You, or God, cannot make people more loving or moral by enforcing laws. It makes moral wrongs, become conflicts with the law. When govt takes the hobbles off of the economic horse, the economy soars, if they would take the chains off of the individual, morality will be in vogue again.
It's not the job of government or any political party of any stripe to see to it that Judeo-Christian morality is taught to the citizens. That is the job of God-fearing Christians who shouldn't be swearing any allegiance whatsoever to any earthly governments nor co-opting these governments to carry out their plans to Christianize the world.
If the society you live in isn't a society comprised of "highly moral, self-disciplined, God-fearing people", then it would seem that the Christians are failing at their task. It's not government's fault that society isn't Christian enough for you, it's solely and entirly the fault of the Christians.
Actually, it is just the opposite.
Any government will work if everyone is nice and moral. It is only a Libertarian government that will work if people are evil.
It is only under a libertarian government that it does not matter how evil the president is, since he would have no power to infringe on others with his evil ideas. Under Libertarianism, the government has very strict limits on what they can do.
If people are NOT highly moral, self-disciplined, God-fearing people, then why would you give them so much power over your lives? The fact that people are not good, is why Libertarianism works so well.
