I don't bother to correct Yanks, Left Coasters, and others when they make their "Tobacco Road" remarks about the South. If they're that ignorant, why educate them? Let them be happy and smug in their erroneous assumptions. That's the best revenge.....

Oh, I live in NH now, which is actually quite nice and oddly Southern-feeling (I'm originally from Texas with family in Oklahoma and pretty much everywhere). However, I get a real kick out of having some Massachusetts know-it-all start in about the South, and how Massachusetts is where the Europeans first landed. Whereupon I say, "The Spanish landed in Massachussets?! That's pretty wild stuff ... never heard that in any of my classes." Whereupon they have to be reminded that Spain is in Europe, and of course the Vikings probably landed here first anyway, and they are also European, but landed way north of MA. Then they say they mean, of course, the British. I say, "You mean the English?" Of course. "Well, you might want to check out a little place called Jamestown. That's in the South. Of course, the Lost Colony was first, but they disappeared. Basically, what you got in MA was a bunch of religious misfits who wanted to start a really repressive religious/political colony and tell everyone else what to do. Hmm ... guess things really don't change much, do they?" Of course, I say it in a real Southern drawl, which deepens as I get more and more sarcastic. Usually, they don't speak to me much after that. And I love it.
