ID cards prevent medical pot smokers from arrest
Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - It's a license to use pot - but only in San Diego.
The San Diego City Council has approved an ID card that will protect sick people who use marijuana from being arrested.
Cardholders will be able to carry up to an ounce of marijuana under the plan, which was thought up by a citizens task force. The program also will have a 24-hour hotline police can call to verify the cardholders' identification.
The start of the program is still about six months away.
The city-issued cards will not protect users from arrest by federal authorities, and cannot be used in other cities.
Marijuana is illegal in California, but voters approved a proposition that allows people to use it for medical purposes after they receive permission from their doctor.

The Feds are probably already on their way to City Council chambers with a battering ram. Mustn't let the little locals get away with making their own decisions...

Wow man let's get the VW Bus and make a road trip to San Diego. I can say I have a hangnail and get a card and not be arrested. Wow I bet you they will soon have cards for ecstasy, heroin, and crack pretty soon.
LOL! San Diego will become the "mecca" for the pot crowd. Hope they like having a bunch of dim witted slackers as their new residents.

[Sarcasm]What are you talking about? Don't you know that the Bush administration supports states' rights? Those damn hippies deserve what they get![/sarcasm]

I'm ashamed of you. Making sure that cancer and AIDS patiens can't toke up is a corner-stone of the War Against Terrorism.

Yep, I'm sure somewhere Osama Bin Laden read the news of this council decision and rubbed his hands in glee.
Meanwhile back at Justice, Big John did the same thing...

I would have to know how many agents they sent in to answer that question. What's the strike force, 2 or 3 body armored, machine gun toting LEO's per cancer patient?

bunch of dim witted slackers Kinda like Dane, Kevin Curry, Ol'Sparky, and a few other drug-war shills on FR that have nothing better to do than spread troll-bait every time they see "marijuana" or "pot" on a thread subject line.
Don't worry -- you and your chums will get your way when Asa and co. crack a few cancer patients' skulls to prevent them from being corrupted by the eeevil devil weed.

You mean the same kind of dim-witted slackers who use the term "LOL!" in every post in lieu of an actual point? Just wondering.

You bet. Someone's gotta save 'em from themselves. If not Government, who?

I think it depends on the type of cancer. Obviously Stage One patients present the greater threat.

Dim-witted slackers will be nothing new in this town...

Can any of you tell me exactly why pot needs to be smoked to be effective ? In my understanding, the active ingredient in pot is THC, which can be administered in a pill form. If this is true, why can't people take THC for the same benefit in reducing sickness symtoms?

Several studies have tackled that question. The concensus is that smoking the drug administers relief more quickly, and allows the patient more control over the dosage of THC. The THC pill as it currently exists is metabolized in the liver and can take up to two hours to provide any pain relief, whereas inhaled THC is effective within minutes.
There are also several other substances present in marijuana believed to have a cumulative effect which, when isolated and reproduced in pill form, become ineffective.

There is also the more obvious point that when used to treat patients suffering from severe nausea, a pill that must be swallowed and ingested is going to be largely ineffective. The only real argument for the THC pill is that it's "safer" than inhaled marijuana smoke because the smoke contains trace amounts of several substances, including carbon monoxide, that can be detrimental to a patient's health over time. Of course, when dealing with terminal cancer and AIDS patients, the phrase "over time" doesn't mean much. The years that it would take for the smoke buildup to become harmful to the body are unfortunately not a factor for these patients.

Also because the symptom being relieved is extreme nausea, which prevents teh use of a pill.
