Actually the cross was only visible if you carefully checked your rearview mirror at just the right angle when southbound on H2 for a very brief period of time. It was located not far from a rather obscure road only accessible to the military that has since been closed because of increased security since 9/11 (it traverses the Lualualei Naval Magazine).
It was rather rusty and not in the best of shape - I could understand the argument that it was too costly to maintain, but the timing of its being taken down was too close to our pro-Satanist friend's protests not to wonder...
