I do not believe that one can form a moral stand from merely physical or physiological sources. The atheist profiled in the article marches for women's rights, gay rights, animal rights and other causes, yet has no real reason to believe that the women, gays, or animals have any dignity at all. In fact, how can he even be sure that they exist? Because he sees them? Because he others tell him (or he thinks that they tell him) that women, gays, and animals exist and are in need of "rights"? What are rights?

All he has is his own perspective. He can call on nothing higher than his own intellect, so he really has no basis from which to form an argument. If I disagree with him he has nothing higher on which to depend.

That is, if you are non-religious. If you have a religion, well, to heck with you. Now, if you want to plaster your office building with gay porno- that is another story entirely I'm sure. In that case you have oogles of 'civil rights'.

Ok, I'll reword it, we don't believe in any religion.

We don't believe that all religions are definitely false. We just don't know which one's right, so we don't believe in any. That isn't to say we aren't looking to find which one we think is right, just that we haven't found it yet.

I remember the Kolekole Pass cross incident. The jerk claimed the cross "offended him," that he was forced to see it when he drove by.

Actually the cross was only visible if you carefully checked your rearview mirror at just the right angle when southbound on H2 for a very brief period of time. It was located not far from a rather obscure road only accessible to the military that has since been closed because of increased security since 9/11 (it traverses the Lualualei Naval Magazine).

It was rather rusty and not in the best of shape - I could understand the argument that it was too costly to maintain, but the timing of its being taken down was too close to our pro-Satanist friend's protests not to wonder...

Oh brother! didn't the article say he came from a religious family? Oh I guess it was one of those religious families who cared so much about their faith, that they never bothered to read the Bible through even once. I wonder how much effort he actually made to honestly understand the Bible and Christian Belief?

You know, you're right. I've made comments about this here on FR several times.

Whenever a religious themed thread is posted, the atheists here flock to it. You'd think that since they have no belief in God, they wouldn't pay it any attention, right? I mean, why take the time to type responses about something in which they profess no belief? I wouldn't waste time posting about the tooth fairy.

My honest opinion is that they have to convince themselves daily that God doesn't exist. Just my opinion, of course.

I'm saying that infinite punishment for finite sin is unjust. What an appropriate punishment/atonement for such a vast amount of sin would be is up to God, not me. I'm guessing that it would be more than just a slap on the wrist.

Read recently that scientists have discovered cats purr at the frequency which helps create bone density. No way to know if they is why cats purr but its a theory.
