Doesn't he talk to his colleagues on the Senate Intelligence Committee? You'd be hard pressed to find another person on the planet who DOESN'T think these countries are frantically trying to buy/build these weapons. Daschle just never met a microphone he didn't like and couldn't think of anything else to say and so he said something stupid (again).

All I can think is that Daschle's major contributors are threatening to cut off money to him and his affiliated Democratic Senate campaign pacs if he doesn't denounce the Bush 'axis of evil' talk.

It makes no political sense otherwise, as it reinforces the weak on national security image Democrats have had since Vietnam. This is not an image Democrats want to have for their party in 2002. Especially since there will be military operations against the axis of evil in the run up and during that election.
