[history]
As they prepare for their pre-election statewide convention, California Republicans have gone into battle mode over plans to squelch a gubernatorial straw poll potentially embarrassing to Richard Riordan.
The move, critics charge, was orchestrated by Riordan's campaign -- with help from the White House.

Why should I have to earn the votes of Republicans when so many Democrats support me?

I either want a real conservative or 4 more years of Red Davis. I prefer the bad guys to be properly labeled -- with a 'D' after their name.
Bill Simon all the way!

"anyone who pays $60 can vote, even Democrats." You would think he would like that.

What I don't get is how Karl Rove ever got so hip on Riordan. I mean if he was an articulate and energetic liberal I could at least see that Rove made a political calculation that Riordan was a hot commodity for the GOP future in California.
But he is an old, crusty, stumbling, confused liberal who only steps in verbal dog poo every day.

I think that must be his public relations excuse. He can't exactly say "well shucks, I'd get my @ss kicked if the members of the Republican Party voted on who they support for Governor."

Riordan is a complete pile and the true GOP faithful know it. A pyrrhic victory is suicide, and a true pol would show that it is actually Simon who connects with most of the GOP fundamentals

Bwahahaha!!! Dickie Pooh would LOVE to have Rats be paid to vote for him in the straw poll to artificially inflate his support which is a mile wide and an inch deep. The reason the straw poll's been blocked is NO California conservative in his right mind could ever be persuaded to vote for that DIABLA. And if conservatives have it their way none will in the March primary. He hasn't won any of the party faithful over and no one likes him. He's just too liberal for the CA Republican mainstream.

Tell us about your blowhard CA Rep. David Drier, originally from MO. Why is he backing Riordan? Drier claims to be a strong "conservative," does he not? Where does Rep. Dana Rohrbacher stand on Riordan? Has he "grown" in office too?
To: Impeach98
Wouldn't you think, Impeach98, that Rove is overrated as a poltical analyst? He probably just sees no way CA Republicans can win anything and is willing to let Riordan spend his own fortune on a race for governor. Rove is probably privately convinced that the CA "democracy" will yet rally and reelect Grayout Davis.
