Ashcroft refused the FBIs request because the request was ILLEGAL!!! Boy, they just HATE when those laws get in their way, don't they?

Funny comments aside, Ashcroft will need a coherent response to this request. The fact of the matter is, Ashcroft recused himself from the Enron matter because the investigation necessarily raises questions of influence peddling.

To my knowledge, there are currently no allegations of influence peddling with respect to U.S. firearms policy. Indeed, the NRA likely contributed to then-Senator Ashcroft precisely because he was already predisposed to vote the way they wanted (this is the type of thing that the McCainiacs don't want to hear vis-a-vis finance reform).

When Ashcroft was confirmed, so were his predispositions and inclinations. Sorry, gun-grabbing jackasses.

To be consistent, we urge Mr. Ashcroft to also recuse himself from all decisions related to firearms policy. Here, we have a situation in which the Attorney General has benefited from more than $370,000 in contributions from the gun lobby and the firearms industry

This whole thing is a pipe dream... the reason Ashcroft recused himself is because Enron is under investigation... I don't think that applies to policy decisions.

Specifically, the Brady Campaign's letter cites several examples of undue access and influence by the gun lobby:

What good would that have done? The attackers used knives and boxcutters, not guns. Besides
Ashcroft isn't allowed to let the FBI or any other agency look into these NICS records. Federal
law, specifically the Brady Law, forbids it.
