I wondered why the clock continued running myself, and I was not too happy about it. True, it would have been an unbelievable longshot, but the Rams should have been given an opportunity to run back the kickoff with at least two seconds remaining.

My guess is that they had trouble getting the Stanford band on the field, so decided what the heck and let the clock run out.

Though it does lead to an interesting thought. On a kickoff, the clock doesn't start until the receiver catches it, correct? If so, could anyone call a fair catch on a skipping grounder? Because the odds of a runback on a squib kick are pretty dang low, but if the Pats did squib it, could the nearest guy on the "hands team" waive a fair catch while the ball is bobbling toward him and then pounce on it, preserving the clock?

Your scenario wouldn't work for two reasons. One, I believe the clock starts when the ball is kicked. Therefore, there would be no other plays. Two, there's no way the Patriots would have kicked straight away. They would have either squibbed it or short kicked it in the middle of the receiving team.

Also, a squib quick is used precisely because it runs time off the clock. You can't fair catch a squib quick; it's fair game for either the receiving team or the defensive team to pick up - it's a live ball, as if it were a fumble.

I like what you said. The Golden Age. Do you know the song that U2 sang, if it was 1 song? I don't know much about U2 (being almost 50, -smile-). But I sure enjoyed that performance. I would like a copy of the whole thing. Wish I had made one. Was it the one called 'Where the streets have no name?'

Going to say this. It beats the hell out of sugar-coated pop crap. I'd much rather hear them than Britney, or N'Sync or any of the other wannabe "singers" that are out there. I don't always like their politics, but they're doing this one right.

Last year's halftime show, with Aerosmith and Britney Spears and the boy bands, was the worst halftime show ever. U2 is the best halftime show I can remember.

Man, I have seen a ton of these MLife commercials in the last couple of weeks. They just finally revealed that it is some kind of ATT wireless service.

I was thinking that MLife was some spinoff of Metropolitan Life Insurance or something. Why would AT&T, which has about as good name recognition as any product short of Coca-Cola, spend all these millions on this? Now I know what my AT&T wireless bills are going for!

I'm a baseball fan, not a football fan. The 2 Minute Drill always seems to generate more points than the regular offense in the rest of the game. Why not do that all day long?

The reason 2 minute drills generate a lot of offense is because the opposing defense usually goes into a "prevent" mode. The defensive secondary lays way back from the receivers to prevent really long plays. The quarterbacks then can pick them apart a lot of times with short to medium passes. When the Broncos played the Packers, the Broncos refused to go into a prevent defense against Farve's last drive. Farve threw an interception. One thing I liked about Dale Earnhardt is that Earnhardt, being a sports fan, hated prevent defenses. :^)

It doesn't do much good to point out that the Rams didn't have a good game, because the Pats clearly did.

And they managed to make it one of the best SB's ever in the bargain as well.

Statistics are a means of measuring the past. I think that's one of the fallacies in Tony Dungy's approach to coaching the Bucs. Playing a purely technical game may result in more wins overall, but it discounts the emotionalism and motivation for winning the big one. I see this happen all the time in the business world of competing for projects. It is often that the highest motivated team wins the job; not necessarily the best technical performer.
