OLGA KORBUT, the former Soviet gymnast and darling of the 1972 Olympics, has claimed that she was groomed as a teenage concubine by her trainer.
Korbut, now in her forties, told a newspaper that her trainer, Renald Knysh, looked on his stars as "potential concubines" as well as champions. Her claims that are the latest in a string of allegations by former East European athletes about their coaches and exploitation by the Soviet system in general.
Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast who at 14 overshadowed Korbut in the 1976 Olympics, was reported to have had an affair with Nicu Ceausescu, son of the Romanian dictator, who ordered the extraction of one of her fingernails for refusing to comply with a debauched demand.
Korbut said that just before the Munich games, at which she won three golds and became famous as a pony-tailed 17-year-old prodigy, Knysh plied her with drink in her room. What happened next led to a relationship that lasted for several years, she claimed.
Korbut, now based in Atlanta, Georgia, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that Mr Knysh brought on "not just potential gymnasts but future concubines for himself". She said: "The truth is that many of the gymnasts were not just 'sport machines' but sexual slaves to their trainer.
"My own training, in his opinion, was complete just before the Olympics of 1972. He came up to my room with a bottle of cognac and forced me to drink several glasses. What came next was a terrible memory that lasted several years."
