SALT LAKE CITY, February 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In the Feb.4 issue of Report magazine, "Brave New World", columnist Celeste McGovern writes of a gruesome method of blood doping used by some female athletes to boost athletic performance. Since enhancing drugs and even regular blood doping can be identified by regulators, the pregnancy-abortion scheme, while officially banned, is virtually impossible to stop.

Mona Passignano, director of research at the Texas pro-life group Life Dynamics is quoted by Report quoting from a Finnish sports medicine expert: "Now that drug testing is routine, pregnancy is becoming the favourite way of getting an edge on competition." One Russian athlete told a reporter that as long ago as the '70s, gymnasts as young as 14 were ordered to sleep with their coaches to get pregnant--and then abort. The procedure is so well known it has made it to the textbooks. LifeSite found the method described in an online textbook in physiology by Dr. Poul-Erik Paulev of the Department of Medical Physiology, University of Copenhagen.

Professor Paulev writes that pregnancy seems to increase muscle strength in female athletes. "Female top athletes - just following the time when they gave birth to their first child - have set several world records. Of course, this is acceptable as a natural and unintended event. However, in some countries female athletes have become pregnant for 2-3 months, in order to improve their performance just after the abortion."

Actually, as an underwhelmingly talented amateur athlete myself, I have read of this gruesome and immoral technique. It is real and it does happen.

What benefits accrue to the athlete who does this? How long do the effects last? Does the athlete perform while in the early stages of pregnancy or just after the abortion?

Report magazine, including its regional editions Alberta Report and B.C. Report, is actually quite serious and respectable. They might also be a revelation for people who think that everybody in Canada is some kind of wannabe Scandinavian social democrat. That said, I don't know if I believe this story. This sounds fishy to me, many gymnasts, even at fourteen, have not acheived menses yet due to the overexercise.

This is actually an "old wives tale." As I am married, I feel like I can talk about this subject in a mature manner. :)

My understanding is that sex doesn't effect performance either way.

Yes, and the vast majority of world class Olympic athletes utilize illegal anabolic steroids, growth hormone, IGF-1, EPO, injectable ATP, and a variety of stimulants. But few athletes, if they are amoral enough to take whatever they must, will allow anything to stand between them and the few hundreths of a second separating them from the competition. So they will do anything, from the useless to the extremely dangerous, to achieve what they imagine is that extra edge.

It really is an exclusive subculture that only the most gifted physical specimens on earth truly understand. I am not one of them, so it fascinates and appalls me as it does many people.

I read the posts, and they proved nothing beyond the fact that one doctor claims this occurs.

I do not for one moment believe that the physical upheaval of getting pregnant, followed by the physical trauma of getting an abortion, can in any way improve the performance of a world-class athlete.

It's non-sensical, no matter what some doctor from the Medicinsk Fysiologisk Institut claims.
