Somebody probably wisely advised her to do her best to stay calm because the kidnappers would draw strength and determination if she seemed about to go to pieces. They are more likely to let him go if they don't think everybody in the west is about to panic at the threats they have made.
Another possibility is the fear that they may be making him watch, in hopes that she'll go to pieces and make him feel even worse.
