There is something to be said for a policy of going the extra mile to get
any American back, even one who himself does not like his country -- even a Johhnie Taliban type, who will face prosecution and perhaps execution after he is rescued.
The enemy needs to know that messing with the USA is a stupid, stupid idea and completely counter to any sense of self-preservation.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE, this should not go unpunished, but we have to dictate how we retaliate and destroy these bastards on our own terms. these terrorists are trying to mess with our current alliance with pakistan and set off a huge powder keg with us, pakistan, india, and the whole freakin middle east.

My problem with Mr. Pearl is not whether or not he loved his country, my problem is with educated men making reckless decisions in a time of war and risking other American's lives to rescue these adventurers from their own folly.
He was warned not to do what he then went ahead and did.
The Pentagon has from day one warned journalist's not to get cute in these dangerous lands, and also and perhaps more importantly.... to stay the "F" out of the way.
What parts of these warning did Mr.Pearl feel didn't apply to himself?
