As members of the FreeRepublic Family I thought you all would want to know that one of your avid FReeper/Lurkers passed away quietly at home on Monday night after a battle with cancer. Robert, my Father-in-law, was 79 and a Marine Veteran. Although he was never quite able to get up the nerve to post here, he avidly read and enjoyed all of your posts daily. He was a man who exemplified courage, strength and an enduring love to his family, his friends, and his country. He was proud to have had the privilege of serving his country for 41 years as a Marine Aviator, active in W.W.II as a flight instructor, then in the Korean War as a pilot (flying off the Yorktown) where he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals in addition to other Service Medals, followed by 20 years in the Marine Corps Active Reserves until 1983.
May I offer to you Freepers, as an important part of his online community, a salute which he would surely do himself if he were here. Robert will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Feb 6 and his soul will find peace with his Creator.

Your father was a real hero!
Too bad he didn't want to share his outlook on life with us! That is our loss!
Men like your father were/are our true treasures of America!

He was proud to have had the privilege of serving his country for 41 years as a Marine Aviator We were lucky to have him! Semper Fi to him, and your family. I just visited Arlington, it is an amazing place that left me speechless, with tears in my eyes.
And here is a call for a "roll call" of sorts, to all you former or current service men who lurk here. C'mon out and get your due welcome!

I am also a Freeper who visits several times a day, but never posts. Bob was a good friend of mine and the father of my son-in law. He will be greatly missed. Goodbye Bob. We will see you and Alice later.

And, I am sure we lost out too, because he never posted here, but I hope if he ran across a post or two of mine, he was able to get a chuckle out of them....

My condolences to your family.
May God grant you & your family peace, and I pray that your father new he was a hero of America and represented all that is right with this country, Honor, Duty, Integrity. Love of God & country. One does not spend 41 years in service for self. I would also like to say that your whole family deserves respect for without the families support warriors like your father could not do what he has accomplished.
Semper Fi!

From a former Naval Aviator (1971-1977), a big salute! I sure hate we are losing these valuable and noble older individuals who are my parent's age. There will never be any more like them, that is for sure. God Bless and Be With You!

My prayers for all of you who survive such a hero!
It is very saddening to be the survivors and so joyous to be the one who is chosen to be with Him!
May He lift him up on Eagle's Wings
