Riordan: A Man for All Reasons
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 27, 2002 | Debra J. Saunders

Stylistically, two men could not be more different than Gov. Gray Davis and former Los Angeles Mayor Dick Riordan, the front-runner in the GOP primary for governor. Riordan wants to charm everyone; Davis wants to intimidate everyone. Davis sticks to his script; Riordan should stick to his script. Riordan talks about "empowering" people; Davis empowers himself. Riordan is gooey; Davis is brittle.

Well I couldn't have said any of this any better than that. For once, this Irishman has nothing more to add!

Saunders seems to be saying that the Dem and the Rino are totally without any platforms. Something that has been stated over and over by Conservatives throughout the state.

All the more reason to work for Simon.

Too bad Saunders is only a columnist and not an editor of the Chronicle. It will be interesting to see who the Chronicle supports as we draw closer to the primary.

I have no doubt the San Francisco Comical will back Riordan in the GOP primary. Which liberal will they back in the general election, likely status quo "moderate" Davis I would imagine.

You are right on about that ... the newspapers will all jump over themselves to support Riordan NOW that he is in the position to destroy the Republican Party, but when push comes to shove, they will back Gray Davis in November, hands down.

What bothers me most about Riordan is his complete lack of regard for Republican voters. He has this arrogance that is disturbing. He thinks that he can say whatever he wants and we'll vote for him because we Republicans want so much to win we don't care what someone says or does.

Riordan has said time and again that after the primary he'll have a different answer to important issues that people of California care about. That means that yesterday he was FOR gay marriage, today he is opposed to it, but tomorrow he may be for it again.

I call upon all those conservatives, particularly the elected officials, who endorsed Riordan because "he can win" and ask them to pull their endorsement. Winning is important. Winning, however, is not everything. And, finally, I think that Davis would love to run against Riordan. Riordan has so much baggage, so many flip-flops and gaffes and bad ideas. Davis will be dancing in the aisles and counting his money if Riordan wins the nomination. And the Democrats will love the fact they'll take any competitive legislative seats because Republicans will stay home and not vote in November.

It's sad, but true.

Bill Simon is a man we can rally around, a conservative who believes in basical conservative principles; a successful businessman who knows how to run a company and stick to a budget; a chartitable leader who knows that government is not the solution to all problems; and I believe him when he says he will not raise taxes. Simon doesn't look or sound like the type of person who will say one thing and do another.

I'm tired of politicians who think that they know better than everyone else, and we need to shut up and take our medicine because it's good for some. I want someone outside of the politicial establishment, that isn't beholden to special interests and other politicians. That someone is Bill Simon.
