Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!
The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.
At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.
The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.
Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!
The snap ran in major papers.
Developing...
Ping. Since you didn't ask, let me give you my first and final reaction:
Good grief! Uncover and move to another place for press conferences if you feel squeamish.

Your meaning is lost to me. Could you please restate your point.
The 'Agenda of the Left' is to dishonor and discredit Ashcroft, never mind the 'inappropriate' camera angles they use for their purpose.
I haven't seen anyone on this thread show the similarly angled shot of Attorney General Reno, with either statue behind her. I guess the 'urinalists' only want to convey the 'boob' issue with Ashcroft.
Especially when dealing with an 'adolescent' and agenda motivated camera crew.
That is a WHOLE 'nother problem. Don't even get me started :)
No, they shouldn't. However, when USED to desensitize a culture to true beauty and love, and turn it to sex and lust, it fails to serve the 'higher' purpose. Tasteless photography in this specific instance, IMHO.
Yes, 'the children', however old they may be.
PEOPLE. EXCELLENCE. STANDARDS."
And, here I thought government buildings were about taxation and voter dependency. Silly me.
Must have lost sight of 'people, excellence, and standards' during the Clinton Administration.
I am in total agreement with you. One cannot 'pluck out the eye of the press that offends thee', but one can give it something else to view.
I'm sure Terry McAuliffe will 'promise' to make it up to them.
I guess that makes us 'disciples'. I like the company. Of course, the religions of the left and middle have their disciples, too. And, in the new math calculations, something hasn't changed. GOD + 1 = majority. I seek to be 1 of the many more than 1 on His side.
Someone's daughter modelled for that statue. If it were my daughter, I would say one of two things to those who would view her. Those viewing beauty - "Thank you, she was created in God's image." Those viewing in lust - "Don't even think it. My shotgun is loaded." {;~)
Not to cast aspersion on the 'cretins' who do the same for paper or cyber ones. I believe 'fleeing' temptation is a good move. For those not so tempted, ever, I commend your self control.
Maybe to just to show how 'intolerant' the preachers of 'tolerance' are? Respect is a two-way street. The photographers 'took their shots'. Ashcroft is entitled to his, IMHO.
