London, Jan 26, IRNA -- For the second successive year, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has rejected an invitation from the government to attend its Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday because it excludes the ongoing Israeli genocide of Palestinians. "Genocide is the most abhorrent and outrageous crime against humanity and we are not going to prevent it by selectively remembering only some of its victims," MCB secretary general Yousuf Bhaliok said. Referring in particular to the ongoing Israeli massacre of Palestinians, he warned that the suffering of Jews during World War Two "must not blind us to the suffering of others, nor should it be cause or justification for one group to oppress another." The national ceremony in London is the second since the British government accepted holding a Holocaust Memorial National Day last year after campaigning by Jewish and Zionist lobbies. The first ceremony also included references to the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Cambodia and Rwanda. But like this year's event, no mention was made of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the occupied territories. Bhailock said that the purpose of remembrance should be to expand compassion. "Ethnic cleansing was not a thing of the past, it is a present terror," he said in a statement obtained by IRNA. "Remembrance must refocus our moral vision, rededicate our commitment to prevent current and future inhumanity, state brutality and crimes against humanity," he said in urging the UK government to reflect on the past and see the same abuses were occurring again.
