The Dream World Of The Doolittle Environmentalist

There are environmentalists, and then there are Doolittle environmentalists. The former is a pretty sharp group. The latter is a sub-culture right up there with the Moonies, snake handlers and charter members of the Will and Grace fan club.

Dr. Doolittle was not an environmentalist. He was a fictional character who spoke to fictional animals. Unfortunately, many of the folks who rant about man's destruction of nature are ingrained with a Doolittle Complex.
Those who mindlessly oppose domestic energy exploration and necessary drilling in the ANWAR, the anti-timber, anti-rancher, anti-meat, anti-mining, anti-anything adherents of PETA, The Fund For Animals, Earth First, and a hundred other pseudo-Druidic nature cults all share certain Doolittlesque attitudes. Man is bad. Animals are good. Man will rape the Earth for profit. The Earth is sensitive, and we must nurture its self-esteem.

Let me tell ya something. Yes, man has raped the Earth on occasion. Funnily, the Earth has an amazing ability to recover. I would submit that it is beyond the ability of man to destroy this planet. We could decimate a high percentage our existing species if we really tried (though nobody is trying) and have already aced a bunch of other species. Still, the Earth will thrive. Survival of the fittest arrives in myriad ways, shapes and forms.

For those who have forgotten history, the greatest destruction of modern life on this planet came neither from the ravages of industrial profit mongers nor from war. It came from Ma Nature herself. Mother Nature can be a mother, more deadly to man than atom bombs or Twinkies. The Spanish Influenza of 1918-1919 infected half the world's population, killing 25 million individuals in just 18 months. World War I, on the other hand, caused 9 million deaths. The Bubonic Plague pandemics of the 6th, 14th and 17th Centuries claimed a total of 137 million victims. Although over a billion people have met their maker after being bored to death by the celebrity droning of Katie Couric, that's an alien attack and can't be included for our purposes.

Need I go on? Responsible loggers, miners and ranchers don't look so bad now, huh?

As to other arguments of the Doolittle environmentalists, let me explain that there are both good and bad animals. Examples of good animals include Mother Teresa, Captain Kangaroo, Ronald Reagan, George W and any dog who hangs out at my shack. Bad animals are the ilk of Usama bin Laden and his pal Jihad Johnnie, a rabid skunk, and any liberal possessing the power of speech (none have the power of thought). Good and bad are highly subjective, but no matter their temperament, non-human animals don't care about the Earth one way or another. They care about dinner.

Early primitive peoples didn't care for the Earth either, or at least no better than us. Any decent archaeologist will tell you, based on evidence from ancient garbage middens, that the tribal peoples of pre-civilization would have thrown their Hardees Styrofoam coffee cups into the landfill just as quickly as we do. Lord knows they threw everything else away. The desire for a disposable society then and now differs only in that our culture present holds a high degree of technological knowledge, whereas our culture past barely had fire. We can make more stuff, hence we have more sophisticated refuse. But, the attitudes are basically the same. A universal constant is "out of sight, out of mind." In short, your trash always looks better in the other guy's back yard.

So, allow me to be the first to say that I support true environmentalists fully. A true environmentalist is concerned with the balance between man and nature, researches the facts and does not let emotion or delusion cloud the judgment when determining how best
to manage nature. A true environmentalist realizes man is at the top of the food chain and that his needs take precedence. At the same time, such an individual is imbued with a responsibility to not abuse, destroy or unnecessarily alter forests, rivers, mountains and wildlife simply for profit's sake or without consideration of effect. Profit is necessary, for as far as I know it's impossible to live in American society without money. Wild things are necessary, for they are part of a balanced system, are quite pretty, and taste right fine. The workable equation regarding environmental issues includes input from hunters, fisherman, loggers, ranchers, miners, developers and reputable scientists. Anyone who thinks different is at best naive.

For quite a number of years this country has been at environmental war. It's the folks who learned wildlife via Disney, those coastal elitists who want to turn rural areas (the west particularly) into their own amusement park, versus those who have a desire to not only work the land but also preserve it. It's the freaks who talk to redwoods against the folks who want to remove dead timber without government interference.

I doubt that a compromise can ever be reached - the Greenies of the left are much like the present majority leader of the Senate, in that they define compromise as "everything my way and nothing for you." A compromise would require admitting the necessity of profit while protecting the integrity of wilderness. Profit is a heinous evil to the socialist left, as well as to partisan Democrats who realize the onset of a prosperous economy (at least before mid-term elections) would find them losing control of the Senate. The former are merely stupid. The latter don't care about the country, jobs or the environment. They care about the power of their party. True environmentalists are needed, rather than the nonsensical ramblings of the angry and brain-dead. Unfortunately, the media prefers to give face time to the latter, and portray the former as heartless monsters.

Dr. Doolittle was a bedtime story for kids. People who tout such a philosophy as the ideal are either dreamers who never grew up or shysters devoted solely to their own political future. I encourage all these ignorant malcontents to talk to the animals till they're blue in the face. Better yet, go talk to the redwoods. The IQ level would be roughly equivalent.

Plus... both radical greenies and liberal politicians love an audience that doesn't talk back.
