Until now, only stem cells from early embryos were thought capable of doing this.

False statement.

Those doing the research have become aware that adult cells can become other cells. Stem cells from bone marrow, for example, have become muscle or brain etc...

I love good news! Someone else posted another article with more details about some of the testing that lead up to this point, but I'm having trouble staying connected and searching today.

Please post any related links on this thread. Good news should always be shared.

That was the topic of another article posted that would make a good link to this thread. I don't remember if I posted it or if someone else did. One of these days I'll get caught back up on my stop the murders research.

Monumental results have been made using adult stem cells. A process that, by the way, doesn't kill a human life. I spoke with a legislator who is introducing a bill to eliminate ESCR and he said this has been the best kept secret going. He also said, contrary to the hype ESCR is getting, there has never been a successful experiment involving ESCR. My alma mater is in the middle of this issue because they are vying for the patent on ESCR. (Quite a legacy, huh)

If the success of adult stem cell usage gets out, it may have a significant impact on the profitability of ESCR, which we all know is the motive behind it.

God Bless,

EODGUY

"Until now, only stem cells from early embryos were thought capable of doing this."

This is a curious piece of misinformation. Last year, there was a similarly optimistic announcement regarding stem cells taken from adult fat tissue. All the major news outlets reported on it.

On what will Bush base the perpetuation of his federal funding for embyronic stem cell testing?

There would still be reasons, e.g., adult cells are damaged (oxygen damage and other wear and tear), supply (for both therapeutic and research uses), cost. At least one private company has already announced that they will be deriving additional hES cell lines.

That was the topic of another article posted that would make a good link to this thread.

When this was a hot topic a few months ago I tried to talk about these aspects of the research as much as I could.

Interestingly, in certain media, intellectual honesty actually existed and the understanding that for actual benefit that may come from clinical implementation of stem cells to people with diseases will be from adult stem cells was acknowledged.

The scientists, even those pro-fetal stem cell research, are usually forthright about acknowledging that, much more so than the mainstream media.

The argument for fetal stem cell research is not that those cells will be used in the ultimate stem cell cures they hope to develop but that having them available for research contributes to the overall understanding of stem cells and will help develop the cures that may arise from adult cells.

Basically the reasoning is, one can get a lot of these fetal derived cells and keep and grow them to a much greater degree than one can obtain the adult cells. They then can be used for basic research on stem cell properties that can be applied to adult stem cells.

That is the argument for fetal stem cell research.

Imagine an embryo stem cell behaving the same way as an adult stem cell. These guys are brilliant to think of something like that.

> If the results are replicated elsewhere...

Key phrase of article. Let's hope.

But the government hasn't bothered about replicated results in many other matters, as long as the issue is sufficiently empowering to our betters. To them, scientific method exists only to provide a source of sound bites and funding.
