Commerce Secretary Don Evans tells "Meet the Press" that he said "thanks for the call" when Enron CEO Kenneth Lay phoned him - but never lifted a finger to aid the bankrupt firm.

January 14, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Federal investigators are reportedly looking for a rat to finger the big cheeses who may have run afoul of the law during Enron Corp.'s colossal collapse.

"...As a card-carrying scandalmonger, I am moved to ask: Where's the scandal? Democratic Representative Henry Waxman, after eight years with his eyes tightly shut, apparently thinks it scandalous that Bush's men — at the first call from Mr. Lay — did not promptly step in to save the company from the consequences of the greed or predations of its managers. Bush is thus damned for what he did not do."

I have been pretty upset the past few days at the way the media is trying to invent a scandal to hang on Bush. But, I'm just sitting back now and actually starting to enjoy it.

The left is foaming at the mouth at this thing. It's like they think they're going to win the lottery or something. It's actually that pathetic. They've got a hundred to one longshot bet on a tired old horse that isn't even worth putting out to stud. That's their number one story- Enron, Enron, Enron.

Number Two Story? President Bush and the pretzel incident. Does anyone else see the humor in this? Their next biggest story is the pretzel incident. The networks are getting experts on the tube and in print to explain how the White House version is or isn't accurate. "Was he choking or was it simply vagus nerve stimulation caused by improper chewing?" yadda yadda yadda. It's hilarious. They are really at the end of their rope (and sanity if I'm to read some pundits correctly).

I wonder if the moves by the energy regulatory agency over the California energy crises had the effect of causing the Enron meltdown.

Also yesterday, two Bush Cabinet members said they never considered intervening during Enron's collapse into bankruptcy - and didn't tell President Bush about the company's calls for help.

When you work for a man of character and you know what he would say in such a situation, thee is no reason to ask if your boss is willing to do something improper or illegal; you already know the answer. GWB would probably bet mad at even the suggestion of intervention in such a case.

I think I read somewhere that any Bush administration officials who owned Enron were forced to sell their shares when they took their positions. That would close the door to any potential scandal in that area.

What bothers me is the total lack of coverage the media is giving Mac McClarty's role in Enron (leaving the Clinton administration and taking a job at Enron). The scandals are hidden within the Clinton administration, not Bush's conserning Enron.

As George Will says, this is a New York and Houston story, not Washington.

If they want to get someone to sing, get the employee list for Arthur Anderson and Enron.
