Why is this a scandal? If this campus pastor is homosexual, and has engaged in homosexual activity on campus, it sounds as if both he and the university have dealt with it in an appropriate way -- quietly, and decisively.

The libs and anti-Christians will want to do a big "ah-HA!" on this, implying some degree of hypocracy by Falwell: "He condemns the gay lifestyle, but it's happening under his nose!" But anyone who has come to Christ for forgiveness knows that being a Christian doesn't guarantee a sin-free or trouble-free life. Probably every Christian struggles with something. The flesh constantly wars against the spirit, and the process of dying to the flesh and fleshly desires can be a lengthy and painful process. Anyone wanting to make political hay over what appears to be a personal tragedy here neither understands the dynamics of spiritual warfare and the struggle against the flesh and the world, nor do they show the parties in what may be a sad chapter in some people's lives any sympathy.

Excellent commentary.

Christians are... gasp!... human! My wife attended Liberty Baptist and she knew that some of her fellow students were struggling with the same things that kids struggled with on secular campuses, including homosexuality. The worst experience my wife had was with a youth counselor, after her graduation from Liberty High School, who invited her to his apartment for a nice dinner, but who turned out to be a dope smoking lecherous liar. Liberty Baptist doesn't have magic walls to keep out the weak minded and immature.

I think you have nailed the issue. If this is true, and I believe the National Enquirer is often correct on these matters, then the people involved reacted according to Christian princples as outlined in the Bible. The girlfriend got her boyfriend to go to someone who could help and she went with him. Other info came to light and the young man on staff involved has decided to leave, e-mailing and apologizing to others. Christians have never been perfect, which is reason they turned to Christ in the first place. They just admit their need of a savior. They make mistakes. We need to keep these folks in prayer. I'm impressed that Falwell returned the call at all.

I agree. Sin is going to occur ANYWHERE. The fact that this might have taken place at Liberty University doesn't make it MORE of a scandal; it makes it LESS of a scandal. The real scandal is taking place at the 99.999% of colleges that teach their students that sodomy is a basic human right.
