Differences caused 'the irretrievable breakdown'

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Michael Jordan's wife has filed for divorce, seeking to dissolve her 13-year marriage to the world's most famous basketball player, the Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site Monday night.

In a petition filed Friday in circuit court in Waukegan, Ill., Juanita Jordan cited "irreconcilable differences" in seeking a dissolution of her marriage to Jordan.

She seeks permanent custody of the couple's three children, the 25,000-square-foot "marital residence" in Highland Park and half the couple's property.

The petition listed the couple as J. Vanoy Jordan and M. Jeff Jordan.

"It is the parties' hope that the media respect the family's need and desire for privacy in this painful matter," Juanita Jordan's lawyer, Don Schiller, told the Tribune.

The six-page petition says irreconcilable differences have caused "the irretrievable breakdown" of Mrs. Jordan's marriage to the basketball superstar and that future attempts at reconciliation "would be impractical and not in the best interests of the family."

The couple was married Sept. 2, 1989, in Las Vegas. Their children are Jeffrey, 13, Marques, 11, and Jasmine, 9.

Jordan cited a desire to spend more time with his family when he retired from the Bulls the first time in October 1994 and again in January 1999.

He maintained his Chicago-area residence when he returned to basketball as a front-office executive with the Washington Wizards last season, but his decision to resume his playing career has kept him in Washington full-time.

The petition describes Jordan as "a well and able-bodied man who is capable of making suitable provisions for the support and maintenance of the Petitioner and for the support and education of the parties' children in a style commensurate with that enjoyed by the parties during marriage."

Jordan, who was paid more than $30 million in his final season with the Bulls, is one of the world's richest athletes.

He plays at home Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Maybe one more reason MJ came out of retirement. Things not too great at home.

What utter BS.

If one of them choses to leave and take the kids, then that's it: they are on their own, entitled to nothing. They are making their choice to leave and break a family. Agghhhhh these people are so rotten. If it isn't MJ's choice, why should he be made into a Sugar Daddy?

What a bit_ _.

Flame away. but my dad paid 18 yrs of child support for me, and I dont think he should have had to. It was not his choice.

I agree with you, but I'm sure it wasn't just her decision. And I'm sure he's not too broke up about it.

You can have all the money, fame, adulation, sycophants, possessions, and looks in the world.

But look at this man. His family is in tatters, he is searching for past and lost glory, and he will now be a lost father to his children.

I wonder where Michael Jorden is in his relationship with God.

I'm not going to flame you. Divorce is horrendous. However, I've heard that he was cheating a lot. And she stood by him while all the cheating was going on, but that certainly wrecks a relationship.

And, maybe he's not cheating as much since he's out of the public eye, and he's home more, but she's probably resentful and still mindful of all the times he was cheating, and surely that's got to hurt a person badly.

BTW, I just don't think relationships can handle any form of cheating whatsoever. The bonding and the glue are gone, sadly. My brother is now getting a divorce since his wife did cheat on him, 2 years ago. The cheating thing, though it might be tempting, it will destroy a relationship.
