A good defense would be to have someone time the traffic light and compare it to a traffic light at another intersection known not to have a red-light camera installed. Basically the defense you would want to mount is that the yellow light is cut down by a couple of seconds so the red light comes on sooner leaving you without enough time to get clear through the intersection. You would want to claim they've set this up not to enhance safety but to increase revenue collection. Call it an entrapment defense if you like since its basically due to the way the red light camera catches violators that there's no way one could really avoid being photographed and sent the ticket.

You are not ticketed because you are in the intersection when the red light comes on ... the ticket is given ONLY when you ENTER the intersection when a red light comes on. So you can enter on a yellow but never on a red. As an aside, I have one of these red light cameras by my office next to UCLA. It has cut down on red light runners considerably on one very bad intersection in particular.

Timing the light may not help. I timed a NYC light at 2.5 seconds, much faster than NJ's 3.5 to 4.0 seconds. I told this to the judge. The officer said the light was at the regulation 5.0; the judge said pay up.

I hope the judge and the officer are driving in NJ, stop at a yellow and the car behind doesn't.
