"...Professor Harry Elmer Barnes in his pamphlet, "The Struggle Against the Historical Blackout' said this, about that: 'If world policy of today (1951) cannot be divorced from the mythology of the 1940's, a third world war is inevitable...History has been the chief intellectual casualty of the second World War and the cold war which followed. In this country today, and it is also true of most other nations, many professional historians gladly falsify history quite voluntarily'...."
I find it fascinating that every American myth can be--in fact must be--torn apart except the myth surrounding the loss of the Republic and the rise of Washington DC as the Other Evil Empire. I use the word "evil" because shout as we may on this forum, literally billions of people on the streets of the world cheered Osama Bin Laden. This would have been unthinkable in 1901 when the USA generated the most hostility among the power elites in the Old and Ancient World--NOT among the man on the street.
I suppose the reason that myth is still sacred is because it serves the purposes of both the Police/Welfare State AND trans-national corporations.
Why, precisely, was the USA involved in stripping Germany of it's military after WWI? Why didn't we strip England and France of their military? Oh. That's right. They "won". Had we kept our noses out of this clash of Imperial powers--you know, simply do what George Washington advised us to do-- the Nations of Europe could only have fought Germany to a draw. The peace treaty drawn up would not have put the burden of "guilt" for the war solely on Germany's shoulders. Only America's late entry and emergence relativley unscathed gave England and France the energy to shove that poison pill down Germany's throat at Versailles.
Hitler becomes a housepainter in Munich without Versailles--without America's entry into WWI. At that, all Woody wanted to do was "make the world safe for democracy". Shoeless George wants to vanquish "terrorism" and "evil" itself.
Result? Just as the Republic disappeared in the 20th Century--The United States Empire will not exist in 2101.
Have fun. You can tell your grandchildren that if only we had killed a few more "evil" people, if only we had set up a few more non-governmental agencies to spread the good news of consumer capitalism. if only we had exported more dailsy-cutter "freedom" and more tomahawk "democracy", more shopping malls, if only we had done more to everybody and for everybody, then everybody would be like us.
If he asks you: "Who are 'We', grandpa?" you can always tell him to lay of the Prozac....

History is bunk.
True history is that history which strengthens the society that teaches it.
Oh, yeah, there is millions of square miles left in Texas and Nevada, Montana etc. Putting up millions of pink and yellow 20 story apartment building will create jobs. We have room for millions and millions of people.
Who cares if the are uneducated? So what if they don't speak our language. If they can't afford medical care, its up to us to give it to them. All we have to do is raise our taxes.
Our so called leaders and politicians say: Those Americans that are protected by tall financial fences will be isolated from the massive waves of millions of uneducated illegals. Those of you that are not quite as financially fortuanate, to bad. Try to assimilate.
.
Well said nomasmojarras...all your posts on this thread.
Reasonable point. Frankly, though, most of the Asians I've known have been quite anti-socialist, many because they've lived through it.
I wonder though, how much here is perspective. When I think of immigrants, I tend to think of the Asian grad students and professors I knew, who were pro-capitalist, planned to stay in the U.S., and were quite respectful of the U.S.'s history. No matter what immigration policy the nation pursues, we need to keep these people coming.
As the Italians came here, they weren't known for printing newspapers or starting organizations advocating the overthrow of the system of govt, and demanding that their children be taught in Italian.
The Germans who came in the 1840s and early 1850s were, however. Lots of associates and fans of that Karl Marx guy and started some of the first major socialist and communist organizations in America.
In fairness here, I'm noting that the "reclaim its white, Christian origins" line isn't a direct quote - but Pat's this close to buying his white sheets.
Knowledge of American history is crucial to our future survival. For if Americans are ignorant of what previous generations fought for and the sacrifices they made, we have a country where a character like Kliñtóñ can be elected President. We have a country where the likes of Madeleine Halfbright can make persuasive arguments to Generals like, Whats the point of having this superb military that youre always talking about if we cant use it?
Ask either of those jokers what Iwo Jima is and theyd probably agree, Oh, Iwo Jima, hes Minister of Economic Development for Mauritania. Isnt he? Yes, yes, I think he is. OK, lets try another question for the two of you. During what years did Carl Marx edit the Rhienische Zeitung? Well lets see now, he joined with Engels to publish The Manifesto in 1847. Well say 1842 to 1843. Yes, yes, thats it, 1842 to 1843. Final answer. Youre right!
Our fantastic American history is spoon-fed in an endless stream of vivid documentaries on the History Channel. There is no longer an excuse for being ignorant of it (What's this black and white stuff? Theres something totally awesome on MTV. I mean, like, they got this dude. Ya know? And, hes nailed to this crucifix and hangin up-side down and then it starts spinning. Turn it on Man!)
But, theres no accounting for the choices people will make.
We already have the largest debt of any nation in the world. That being the case, the possibility of third world poverty isn't all that difficult to imagine sometime in America's future.
As for the kids, I have this niggling little suspicion that many of our young folks(at least those that I know) are more aware of what's going on than we give them credit for. Its getting harder and harder for them to get their feet firmly planted, much less put up that good old yuppie 'better than the Jones'es' facade and they also fear for the future. Giving credit where its due, I will admit that there may even be a little personal selfishness in that equation.
As for Nazi v. fascist, Nazism involves German nationalism and allegiance to Adolf Hitler, and despite all of his rantings, I don't think Buchanan has gone that far. Thus, he's not a Nazi.
This is because the environmental lobby has been infiltrated by communists that want to bring down this country. Secretly favoring unlimited immigration is a way to accomplish their aims while feigning concern about the environment.
She is also, for no apparent reason, the darling of many in this forum for VP (in the event Cheney has to step down) and POTUS in '08. Sick. 'Course guys like Pat who haven't "held office" aren't leaders.
That was reached about 25 years ago...
My comment was about learning English. I don't advocate wholesale immigration to the USA.
Not looking for the pile, but not denying the liklihood of its being there. Generally, I give very little validation to the mainstream media. How cognizant you are of the enormity of the Enron scandal remains unknown, however, Kenneth Lay of Enron is Bush's chief financial backer. There are many questionable business practices if not out-and-out fraud about this whole stinking pile. Lay took $130 million in salary in the year Enron went belly up on the backs of the investors and the employees.
See what I mean? The pony is having a shitfit and you want the pony to stay in the livingroom because he's so cute.
Well if they don't want to come here, why do we have immigration laws that keep them out?
WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! The early Italian settlers published many socialist and anarchist newspapers, the latter of which arose the ire of Theodore Roosevelt. Let's also not forget Sacco & Vanzetti.
I am half-Polish American and my grandmother was taught in a POLISH LANGUAGE parochial school in Newark, New Jersey.
